Introduction • Ellis Island is an historic place locatedat the mouth of the Hudson River in New York, in New Jersey. • EI has haddifferentnames: Kiosht, Oyster Island and Giggert Island.

Later, the name of the islandchanged to Gibbert Island because a lot of men werehanged. EI wasbought in 1808 by the US WarDepartement for 10.000 $. In 1814, EI became an immigrant station.

Theyreceived a gold medalat the 1900 Paris Exposition for the building’s design. • The homesteadActwas a lawthat gave a freeholdtitle to 160 acres (one quarter section or about 65 hectares) of undeveloped land . The person to whom the titlewasgrantedhad to beat least 21 yearsold, to have built on the section, to have farmed on it for 5 years, and to have a house thatwasat least of 12 by 14 feet (3.6X4.3 m) in size. The Actwassignedinto a law by President Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862. • Ellis Island welcomed 12 million people and wasclosed in november 1954.

If therewas a possible problem, the immigrants weremarkedwithchalk. • Then, theytook a number of exams : an ocular exam wasdone by using a buttonhook. • Moreover, a lot of questions wasasked to the immigrants whodidn’tspeak the samelanguage. That’swhy a translator waspresent.
Conclusion • Ellis Island welcomedseveral million of immigrants between 1892 and 1954. These people wouldfinallyfulfilltheir American Dream. • Now, it’s a museum and a national monument.
