He was born in the family cabin of Xavier in the Kingdom of Navarre on 7 April 1506 . He was born to an aristocratic family of Navarre. In 1512, Castile invaded Navarre. Many fortresses were devastated, including the family castle, and land was confiscated. Francis' father died in 1515.
At the age of 19, Francis Xavier went to study at the University of Paris and became acquainted with Ignatius Loyola .Along with Ignatius, Pierre Favre and four others, he formed the Society of Jesus.
Francis Xavier devoted much of his life to missions to remote countries. • He spent the following three years operating out of Goa like Portuguese colonies, Mozanbique and India. • He left for his first missionary activity among the Paravas.With the results of his activity he planned a missionary journey to Macassar. • While he was in Malacca ,before arriving to Macassar,he met a Japanesse nobleman called Anjiro so he decided to travel to Japan.
He returned to India in January 1548. The next fifteen months were occupied with various journeys and administrative measures in India. Then due to displeasure at the unchristian life and manners of the Portuguese, which impeded misionary work, he went forth once again into the unknown Far East.
Xavier reached Japan in 1549. He first went to the island of Kyushu and he was the host of Ajiro's family until October 1550. From October to December 1550, he resided in Yamaguchi. Shortly before Christmas, he left for Kyoto, but failed at meeting with the Emperor. He returned to Yamaguchi in March 1551. There he was permitted to preach by the daimyo and he taught the (christianism ). Xavier worked for more than two years in Japan and saw his successor-Jesuits established. Yamaguchi nowadays
He left Goa in 1552 and took a boat called Santa Cruz to China.When he arrived at China he was together with Alvaro Ferreira, a chinese man called Antonio and a servant. He sent a letter saying that a man had agreed to take him to the mainland in exchange for a large sum of money. Having sent back Álvaro Ferreira, he remained alone with Antonio. He died at Sancian in the year 1552 on the 3rd of December while he was waiting for a boat that would agree to take him to mainland China. The body is now in the Basilica of Bon Jesus in Goa.
The non-Christian perspective • In Europe, the Goa Inquisition became notorious for its cruelty and use of torture, and the French philosopher Voltaire wrote "Goa is sadly famous for its inquisition, which is contrary to humanity as much as to commerce. The Portuguese monks deluded us into believing that the Indian population was worshiping The Devil, while it is they who served him.”
Legacy Pope Benedict XVI said: Both Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier: "not only their history which was interwoven for many years from Paris and Rome, but a unique desire — a unique passion, it could be said — moved and sustained them through different human events: the passion to give to God-Trinity a glory always greater and to work for the proclamation of the Gospel of Christ to the people who had been ignored."
