Graduation Project Preparation 2012-2013 Integrating Quotes into Sentences
10/23/2013 • A dropped quotation is a quote that a writer has just dropped into his or her text without integrating it into a sentence. • The quote should never be a separate sentence; it should always be connected to your own sentence.
Integrating Quotes • Step 1: Look at paraphrased answer and parenthetical reference. • Step 2: Rewrite answer using the modeled direct quotation sentence structure. • 2A: Study the model I wrote you for. • 2B: Finish the sentence I started. • 2C: Write your own sentence.
Integrating Quotes Step 1 • (Step 1) Modeled Example: Example:What does Lord Randall ask his mother to do in every stanza? • (Step 1) Lord Randall asks his mother to make his bed because he doesn’t feel well and needs to lie down (“Lord Randall” 3-4).
Study the Model, Step 2 • Option 1: For example, “Quote” (citation). *This is the easiest and most common format.* • Example:What does Lord Randall ask his mother to do in every stanza? • (Step 2A) For example, “I hae been to the wild wood; mother, make my bed soon”/For I’m weary wi’ hunting and fain wald lie down” (“Lord Randall” 3-4).
Details, Details, Details • Ellipsis • For example, “I hae been to the wild wood…/For I’m weary wi’ hunting and fain wald lie down” (“Lord Randall” 3-4). • Brackets • For example, “I [Lord Randall]hae been to the wild wood; mother, make my bed soon”/For I’m weary wi’ hunting and fain wald lie down” (“Lord Randall” 3-4). • Line Break • For example, “I hae been to the wild wood; mother, make my bed soon”/For I’m weary wi’ hunting and fain wald lie down” (“Lord Randall” 3-4).
Integrating Quotes, Step 2 • (Step 2B) Guided Practice: 1. Where had Lord Randall been? What had he been doing? • For example, “____________________” (PR). • (Step 2C) Independent Practice: 2. Who did he dine with? • Write a sentence modeling the structure.
Integrating Quotes Option 2 • Option 2: Person says, “Quote” (citation). *Person can be changed into any noun or pronoun. Says can be changed into a variety of action verbs.* • Example: 1. Where had Lord Randall been? What had he been doing? • Lord Randall explains, “I hae been to the wild wood; mother, make my bed soon”/For I’m weary wi’ hunting and fain wald lie down” (“Lord Randall” 3-4).
Integrating Quotes 3 • Option 3: Complete statement supported by quote: “Quote” (citation). *The clause must be a full sentence. Test be reading alone. The quote proves the sentence. * • Example: 2. Who did he dine with? • Lord Randall ate a meal with his true love: ’I din’dwi’ my true love; mother, make my bed soon” (“Lord Randall” 7).
Integrating Quotes 4 • Option 4: Finish the sentence with a “quote” (citation). *Sentence would be a fragment without the quote. Test by reading alone.* • Example: 3.What did he eat for dinner? • For dinner, Lord Randall “gat eels boil’d in broo; mother, make my bed soon (“Lord Randall” 11).
