Standard Peugeot 406 diesel turbocharger compressor wheel Drinks bottle as secondary air plenum and distributor Carbon Fibre front casing and compressor housing Rapid Flight Demonstration of Circulation Control Roll Effectors Name: - Stephen N Michie E-Mail: - Stephen.michie@postgrad.manchester.ac.uk Supervisor: - Dr. W.J. Crowther Introduction • Base Model, IRVINE Tutor-40 trainer aircraft. • 0.46 cubic inch engine capacity, generating 25N static thrust, overall weight, 22N • Cruise speed 25-30m/s, Span, 1.59m, chord 0.27m, length, 1.5m Turbocharger Unit • 1 stage radial compressor • Contained within 2 piece carbon fibre casing • Usually high mass flow, high pressure • Ideal for meeting pressure/flowrequirements • Approx. 0.05 kg/s mass flow measured at 30000RPM • Plenum chambers integrated into wings • Ducting carried through hollow wing sections • Half span ailerons retained for auxiliary roll control • Secondary air supply mounted in fuselage • Air flow controlled by simple valves in pipe work CC Slot Specification Length 289mm Height 0.15mm Coanda Diameter 6mm Mass Flow Rate 0.004kg/s Velocity 40m/s Plenum Pressure 0.15Psi • Airspace 100m radius from pilot, minimum turn radius, 30m at 20-25m/s • Required bank angle 45°, Roll requirement of 45°/s (based on radio control model controllability) • Required blowing coefficient of 0.0005 • Mass flow of 0.005kg/s, jet exit velocity ~ 45m/s Conclusions Relatively simple modifications required to a ready-built aircraft to enable a practical demonstration Circulation Control should provide control effectiveness equivalent to standard ailerons, (retained for emergencies) Simple CC system on Tutor 40 aircraft, more complex setup on integrated demonstrator 2 options for secondary air supply Simple, cheap and lightweight flow control methods used to operate systems
