Five Fold Ministry Eph. 4:11-12
Apostle • a delegate; specially, an ambassador of the Gospel; officially a commissioner of Christ ["apostle"] (with miraculous powers): KJV-apostle, messenger, he that is sent • apostello (ap-os-tel'-lo); from NT:569 and NT:4671; set apart, i.e. (by implication) to send out (properly, on a mission) literally or figuratively:
Apostle • One who must preach and teach truth. (II Cor. 11:13) false teacher, untrue, deceitful, liar: • One who was sent of God to establish true: doctrine (Eph. 2:19-20) • One used to perfect (complete furnishing, repair (literally or figuratively) or adjust: • Acts 2:42 • Example Acts 15:2 • One who is a pillar within the Church
Prophet • a foreteller ("prophet"); by analogy, an inspired speaker; by extension, a poet: • Fore: in front of, prior • The Church is built upon Apostles and Prophets (Eph 2:19-20) • Abraham was a prophet (Gen. 20:7) • David was a Prophet (Acts 2:30) • Where prophets are received (Mark 6:4)
Prophet • Most people think to be a prophet, one only tells one’s (individual) future. • Let understand the Gifts or knowledge and wisdom • If one is given these gifts it does not automatically make them a prophet
Prophet • One who preaches repentance to God’s people (John the Baptist) • The prophet is God’s warning to the human race. • Jonah 1:2 Nineveh • An Apostle establishes true doctrine. • A Prophet keeps people in it.
Evangelist • preacher of the gospel:-evangelist. • to announce good news ("evangelize") especially the gospel: • It is mentioned only 3 times in the Bible • Acts 21:8, II Tim 4:5 and our text Eph 4:11
Acts 21:8 • And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him. • Acts 8:5-12 & 8:26-39
II Tim 4:5 • II Tim 4:1-5 • Paul gave Timothy a charge • Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. • For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; • It will have the work of both Apostle & Prophet
II Tim 4:5 continued • But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. • The work of an evangelist is preaching to the lost (not setting doctrine or keeping the church in true doctrine)
Revival • This word is not in the Bible. • So what is it? It is the church doing the work of reconciliation. • The Five fold ministry is for perfecting the saints for the work of the ministry. • Apostles & Prophets are for the perfecting of the saints. • Evangelists are to assist in the work of the ministry (reconciliation)
Pastors/Teachers • A shepherd/an instructor: They watch over God’s flock. • Acts 20:27-31 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.
Shepherds/teachers • They are to feed, protect, and lead God’s sheep. • Therefore this office edifies (builds up, gives strength) to the body of Christ. • They watch for the souls of the saints much like a shepherds watches for the life of the sheep (Heb. 13:17)
Review • Apostles set true doctrine • Prophets enforce that doctrine • Evangelists assist in reaching the lost • Pastors/Teachers are local overseers feeding, protecting, interceding, and leading God’s people.
