The “roots” of Interior Design • 20th century women looking for a way to earn $$ after World War I • Wealthy, residential basis (New York, East Coast, The Hamptons) • Theatrical design (Elsie de Wolfe) • Self proclaimed “decorators,” such as Sister Parish of the 30’s (uneducated) • Based on “good taste”

Did you know….. • PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN in New York City was the first school of interior design • The first professional organization AID (American Institute of Decorators) was formed in Grand Rapids, MI • FIDER was formed in 1972 to insure consistency and quality in educational standards for interior designers

  7. Today in 2003, Interior Design is a profession defined by: • Education • minimum of 2 years • Experience • minimum of 3 years • Examination • NCIDQ or other

So what is Interior Design about? • Space planning: analyzing clients’ needs • Human factors: ergonomics, anthropometrics • Laws, codes and industry standards • Building and interior materials; environmental issues, green design • Problem solving • Technology; in the work place and home • Project management: budgeting, schedules, bid documents • FFE: furniture, furnishings, equipment

  9. It’s about…… Designing spaces successfully based on creativity, research, knowledge, and technology. ….and your education is the first step in your career path as a professional INTERIOR DESIGNER!

The Profession Today • Move toward licensing and/or registration in the US and Canada • Education, Experience and Examination is required for practice • Professional organizations: • ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) • IIDA (International Interior Design Association) • ARIDO (Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario) • CIDC (Certified Interior Designers of Canada)
