What is sexual abstinence?(If you don’t get this right on the first try, Mr. Galle will fail ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!)
Sexual abstinence is choosing not to participate in any sexual activity that can result in pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
The word “abstinence” means to do without something. However, remaining sexually abstinent comes with many benefits. We are going to identify those benefits.
Turn to “Benefits of Abstinence” on page 18.Complete the activity sheet. We will list responses on the board.
If you didn’t say it… • Self-respect and respect from others • No worries about getting pregnant or STD/HIV • Freedom from pressure to have sex • Not having regrets • Keeping to your religious beliefs • Protecting your reputation
As a class, let’s decide on the “Top 10” benefits of those that we have listed.
Turn to “My Advice About Abstinence” on page 19.You are going to write a letter to a 6th-grade boy or a 6th-grade girl on why he or she should remain abstinent.Remember letter format (greeting, 3 paragraphs, closing, signature line).
What were some differences you noticed between the letters to boys and those to girls? What were some of the similarities?
Abstinence is important to both boys and girls, even though they may have different reasons.
Take home the “Staying Abstinent: Parent Interview”.In our next class, you’ll be asked to share some of your parents’ good ideas for staying abstinent.
