Ultimate Performance State State of high, positive energy marked by an almost surreal capacity to perform • Absence of fear – no fear of failure • No thinking about or analysis of performance • A narrow focus of attention concentrated on the activity itself • A sense of effortlessness and deep calmness • A sense of personal control • A distortion of time and space, in which time seems to slow • Extremely high confidence
Ultimate Performance State • Physical (body) • Foundation of state, increased blood flow • Emotional • Balance, complete engagement, positive sensations • Mental (mind) • Improved cognitive (thinking) skills • Spiritual • Aligned with values and philosophy, powerful motivation
Values: Self-awareness Foundation: • Personality • Character • Beliefs • Morals • Philosophy
The most important question to ask an athlete • WHO ARE YOU? • It is not what the athlete does or says that defines them…it is how they think and feel. • Coaches believe that understanding the answer to this question is the key to unlocking an athlete’s ultimate performance state.
Performance Supply Chain ACTIONS THOUGHTS FEELINGS/ EMOTIONS VALUES Behaviours you exhibit to fulfill your role demands, unit/team KPI’s OBSERVABLE Internal dialogue that influence your ability to identify and select behaviours HIDDEN Physical sensations or deep experiences that influence how you respond MIXED Deep and historically entrenched constructs that influence how you see the world HIDDEN
Self-Awareness:Values underpin you Complete your list of values for you as a person [not just a coach]. Highlight your thoughts, feelings and emotions that are attached to these. Identify the values, thoughts, feelings and emotions that are helpful for you to coach effectively.
Self-Awareness through Reflection • Identify from your last training session or game, a significant moment [positive or negative] • For example, a play you called for the team, a talk with a player, a team-talk, the tactics you played for a game, an argument with someone. • On a blank piece of paper, reflect upon that moment, writing as much detail as possible
Reflection Task • On the guided reflection sheet provided, reflect on the same key moment • Ensure you go through the five stages • Action plan should detail the goals to be worked on
Action Planning – Goal Setting • When setting goals, think SMARTER • Specific (yet allows flexibility) • Measurable • Achievable (controllable) • Realistic (Resources required?) • Timed • Evaluate • Reward or re-set
Goal Setting Task • Using your guided reflection, specifically your action plan section • How will you go about doing things differently? • How will you work on the actions you need to? • What precise goals will you set yourself to achieve, to ensure you have worked on the things you need to? • Coaches need to help players with their goal setting.
Routines • Allow players to focus on performance elements. • Physical, mental, technical, tactical • Provide players with confidence knowing that they are preparing for their performance. • Should be used to activate player values. • Should include reflecting on performance. • Should include working on goals. • Will ignite a player’s ultimate performance state.
