What do they eat? They eat shoots, roots, seeds, veggies, insects, worms, spiders, small eels, fish, frogs, duck eggs and very small birds.
Where andhow long do they live and do they live in groups? They lived in swamps now on the sides of roads or in paddocks. They live for 3-6 years. They live in groups. Who are their predators? Pukeko predators are hawks, rats, stoats, cats, dogs and possums.
Can they swim and fly and are they aggressive? Yes, they can swim but they cannot fly and they are very aggressive and territorial. Can you kill one? No, if you kill a Pukeko you could get an $100, 000 fine.
How have we effected their life? We have taken away lots of their natural habitat, Swamplands. How can we help them? By leaving some of their swamps, streams and ponds alone.
