Brief Overview A group of MIT students will go on the AIDS Awareness Trip to New York City this spring to learn more about the population of AIDS clients in the city and learn more about the issues surrounding AIDS such as testing, prevention, drug abuse, diversity of the affected population, homosexuality, homelessness, services to AIDS survivors, etc. A significant aspect of the trip will be to experience personal contact with those dealing with this disease.
What are we doing? Traveling to New York City High population of AIDS patients Meet with health care professionals and AIDS patients by volunteering at 2 AIDS organizations What is our goal? Learn more about AIDS Understand the experience & struggle of living with AIDS Participate actively in helping AIDS patients Become more active in our own communities Motivation
Location: New York City-Manhattan Gay Men’s Health Crisis Center (location) work with meals program during day Lower East Side Harm Reduction Center (25 Allen St.) work with needle exchange in the evenings Logistics
Pre-Trip meetings (TBA) Reading material, articles, etc. -Study in 6 Cities Finds H.I.V. in 30% of Young Black Gays (NY Times)-Brazil (NY Times)-statistics on AIDS Evening reflection sections Participant Education
5-6 meetings to get acquainted with each other Speakers from local AIDS/health care organizations Movie screenings: -And the Band Played On-Philadelphia Visit local needle exchange in Cambridge (near MIT) Visit local AIDS Organization (Huntington @ Symphony) Preliminary trip to NYC? Pre-Trip
