Waste Sector Group • Significant issues – regional/national • Japan: Multiple benefits on Waste Management • Malaysia: Relationship/linkages to sectoralissues on waste management • Malaysia: Waste Management System need in countries • Brunei, Myanmar & Thailand: Limited institutional capacity/no institutional structure • Rural waste management issues • Brunei: Improper management of landfill • White pollution [plastic waste] e.g. Myanmar • Limited infrastructure • Myanmar & Thailand: Limited capacity of local authorities to manage solid waste e.g. experts and resources as well as law enforcement

  3. Waste Sector Group • Good examples – to upscale • Thailand: Forum for sharing knowledge and experiences at local communities/cities • Contest on city/community level performance on MSW • Mongolia: awareness raising on the use of plastic bags • Community engagement on waste management

  4. Waste Sector Group • Main barriers for action • Localization of appropriate technology under local conditions • Influx/migration from rural to urban • Institutional capacity

  5. Waste Sector Group • Action at country level • Engagement with existing initiatives/ platform e.g. CCAC, for capacity building • National/city level can partner with CCAC activities • Research on the linkages - health care cost and MSW

  6. Waste Sector Group • Support needed- regional processes, or bodies, the CCAC and others • Regional processes can showcase these best practices as well as lessons learnt from other countries on MSW • Identification of appropriate technology • Provide pool of expertise as well as financing, among others
