What is a “Library Catalog”? HISTORY LESSON: The “Card Catalog” is organized by author, title, and Library of Congress Subject Headings. One item might have 6 or more cards!!

Which Campus? • Goleman Library @ Stockton Campus • South Campus Library @ Mountain House = Room 402 • Where inside the “collection”? • Library of Congress Call Number – assigned according to subject to group similar subjects together. • Reserves • Main Book Collection • Skills Express • Reference • Juvenile Picture Books • Periodicals • Careers • Audiobooks, Music CDs, and DVDs too! Narrow your results using “Limit Search Results” in left column.
Change Results List to sort by Publication Date to get newest books listed first! • Click on blue text of title to find the location information for the book!

Which Collection? Where in the collection? Current Status? Which Campus? Writing down the Library of Congress “CALL NUMBER” will get you in the subject area if you want to browse the shelves!
Find the section in the stacks that starts with the classification letters. • Then, look for the first group of numbers after you’ve found the letter section. • Then, look for the letter in alphabetical order before the decimal number . First Then Then Locating the item in the stacks:
Many, but not all, textbooks being used in your classes. • We have a textbook if an instructor or student donates a copy to the library for student use. • Collections of articles and other supplementary material that may be helpful to review. • Study guides and/or past tests. • Some VHS or DVD materials. • Most materials are “One Hour – Library Use Only” but still require a library card to check out and use. • Renewals may be possible • Photocopier and scanners available • You must provide the CALL NUMBER to the circulation staff. Browsing for a DVD to borrow for 3 weeks? Type “films” into the search box.
Don’t use long phrases or sentences. • Check your spelling! • Assasination • Use Library of Congress subject headings – click on cross-references to find items on the related subjects! • Conduct a keyword search, using Title keywords and Author’s name if you have both (Try Nutrition, then try Nutrition Smolin) to narrow down your search. • Use caution when searching by ISBN (i.e. 9780321771902).
