What do Freshman need to know? • ALL of our students will graduate with a college and career ready transcript. • Our school environments are positive, structured, and students enjoy a wide-range of activities and athletics. • We all have closed campus lunch for 9th graders.
What do teachers need to know? • Students will graduate on time and with a transcript which allows them all post-secondary options. • All students encouraged take “stretch-classes” such as AP, 4 years of science, math, etc. • What used to be thought of as “electives” are not “electives” anymore. (1 year Art, 1 year CTE graduation requirements). • Very little, if any, room for failure.
PSAT, SAT, ACT, Compass, AP, ASSET, ASVAB testing on campus We partner with all the local colleges and universities Students have multiple opportunities to visit college campuses, and visit with college reps on our campuses Creating a College-Going Culture
High Expectations for ALL Students • Every student leaves LC, NC, and Rogers with a transcript ready for College or Career pathway • Advanced Placement • 20 different AP classes offered • PSAT for all 10th-11th grade students • SAT for all 11th grade students • Strong focus on improving high school graduation rates • All seniors complete a college application and FASFA
Plan for Freshman Success • 9th grade transition team • Advisory class for all students • Grade-level counselors (Rogers, NC), Alpha (LC) • AVID • GEAR UP • CAPS (SpEd) • CORE(LC) • 7th Period (NC) • Freshmen Seminar (Career Choices) to support transition to high school (Rogers) • In school, including extended school day (Rogers) • Academic Mentors(Rogers, NC) • Homework Center (LC , NC)
Advisory • 9th-12th grade advisory, meets once a week • College and Career Readiness (T-2-4) emphasis • Ready-In-Through mantra • Financial planning • Other topics: • School activities • Culminating Project • Mentoring • Registration
9th Grade Choice • Students will select – Math, Science, English, & Fitness/Health courses • That leaves two Elective Choices at 9th grade • If they select any two electives: such as AVID, AFJROTC (Rogers), Biomedical Science, Pre-Engineering, CTE, Band/Choir, or World Language, postponing Fitness & Health is approved. • If they chose only one elective, Fitness and Health are highly recommended for 9th grade.
Pre-AP and AP Stretch Options • 9th Pre-AP Courses: • English (required summer assignment) • World History (Pre-AP Human Geography –Rogers) (AP Euro - LC) • Human Geography AP (NC, LC) • Geometry and Geometry Honors (pre-req: Algebra), Algebra 2 and Algebra 2 Honors (pre-req: Algebra and Geometry) • Science (Chemistry and Physics - LC), (Biology - Rogers), (Biology or Chemistry - NC) • AP Digital Studio Art - NC • NO application required • We encourage students to challenge themselves • Students can take any or all of the Pre-AP/AP classes
The AVID Student Profile Students with Academic Potential Average to high test scores 2.0-3.5 GPA College potential but could use support Desire and determination First in family to attend/graduate from college Historically underserved in 4-year Colleges Low income Special circumstances Students will need to apply and interview to enter AVID
Pre-Engineering/Technological Design Year-long CTE elective for students who: Are problem solvers Enjoy creating new things Like to know how things work Think about ways to make things work better Want to find new ways to apply math & science Can be taken as part of a 4-year course of study
PLTW – Engineering (NC) • FIRST YEAR • Introduction to Engineering Design for students that enjoy hands on projects. • They use 3D modeling software to help design solutions to solve proposed problems • Document work using engineer’s notebook and communicate solutions. • SECOND YEAR - Principles of Engineering • THIRD YEAR - Specialization Course • FOURTH YEAR - Engineering Design and Development Capstone Project
Bio-Medical Science Year-long CTE elective “Real world” science, university-level research Hands-on activities Solving mysteries like TV’s House or CSI Learning about cutting-edge careers in medicine and biotechnology Career and CollegeReady elective Can be part of a 4-year course of study
North Central High SchoolInstitute of Science and Technology 4 year work into the world of molecular science Authentic, real world science, university-level research into Molecular Science Dive into the world of molecular ecology – and bio-diversity Sequence DNA and understand complex cell functions Engage in field immersionsand grow your lab skills
Intro to Computer Science This is a program for students who: Is interested in technology. Likes hands-on activities. Likes to solve complex problems. Is creative. Leads into AP Computer Science Students can join the CyberPatriots club which focuses on cyber-defense.
SVL Options Students can take SVL courses over the summer or during the school year to free up elective space. Student athletes (school or private club sports) can take the Athlete Fitness Credit option – their sport will count for the fitness portion, and they will complete SVL curriculum for the academic portion. It is very helpful if students write that they plan to take ANY SVL course on their registration form.
