Registration for 8th Grade • ALLincoming 8th Graders will register on-line at school with assistance from the Counselors.

G/T HUMANITIES • Students currently enrolled in G/T Humanities will automatically be enrolled for 8th grade. • G/T Humanities classes are double blocked consisting of English and History • Students enrolled in G/T Humanities and who wish not to be must apply for a furlough through Learner Services. • Those interested in G/T Humanities program, contact Barbara Myer, GT/Adv. ADVANCED COURSES • 3 of the 4 Core Classes in 8th Grade are “self-select”: • English 8 Pre-AP/IB • U. S. History 8 Pre-AP/IB • Science 8 Pre-AP/IB
English 8 Pre-AP/IBRequirements • Read and understand a wide variety of literary and informational texts; • Compose a variety of written texts with a clear controlling idea, coherent organization, and sufficient detail; • Research to locate a range of relevant sources and evaluate, synthesize, and present ideas and information;
English 8 Pre-AP/IBRequirements, continued • Listen and respond to the ideas of others while contributing their own ideas in conversations and in groups; • Learn how to use the oral and written conventions of the English language in speaking and writing. • All students have a required summer reading list.
U.S. History Pre-AP/IB This course is designed to prepare students for AP U.S. History at the high school level. The course is a faster paced course and focuses on higher order thinking skills. The course also has a larger writing component.
Science 8 Pre-AP.IB • This course is designed to prepare students for advanced Science at the high school level. This course requires students to perform field and laboratory investigations at a more advanced level using the scientific method in relation to Earth, Life, and Physical Sciences. Students will have opportunity to participate in Science Fair.
ALGEBRA 1PAP/IB • Student qualifies based on: * Orleans Hanna Prognostic Test * 6th grade Math STAAR score * 7th grade, 1st semester Pre-AP/IB Math grade • Student must be enrolled in 7th grade Pre-AP/IB Math • Student will receive 1 high school credit if all requirements are met (grade is not included in high school GPA). • Course content and work load are the equivalent of a high school course. • High school expectations will be adhered to throughout the year.
Business Information Management 1 • Students completing all the requirements of this course will receive1High School Credit (grade not included in GPA). • Full year elective • It is recommended that students are able to type at least 25words per minute.
Principles of Hospitality and Tourism • Students completing all the requirements of this course will receive.5High School Credit (grade not included in GPA). • One semester elective
FOREIGN LANGUAGE Spanish 1 PAP/IB & French 1 PAP/IB Students must qualify with an 85 or higher in Math and English for the first semester of the 2013-2014 school year. • Students will earn 1 High School Credit if all requirements are met (grade not included in GPA). • Course content and workload are the equivalent of a high school course with extensive outside-of-class preparation. High School expectations will be adhered to throughout the school year.
Coed PE Students are required to take 2 semesters of PE credit during Middle School. Students who have not completed this requirement, must take PE during the 8th grade.
ATHLETICS • All 8th grade boys wanting to play Footballwill sign up for Athletics Fall and Spring. • All 8th grade boys wanting to try out for Basketball will sign up for PE Fall and Spring. Schedule changed after tryouts. • All 8th grade girls wanting to try out for Volleyball or Basketball will sign up for Athletics Fall and Spring. • All students wanting to try out for Golfand Tenniswill sign up for PE (golf—fall) (tennis—spring). Schedule changed after tryouts.
Sports Physicals • Sports physical paperwork should be given to the student’s coaches. • Sports physical forms and information are kept with the athletic department. Forms and information can also be found on the Allen ISD Athletic Department web page.

Strategies Classes If any student does not pass his/her Math or Reading STAAR test in 7th grade, he/she will be enrolled in Strategies classes per District Policy. The Strategies takes the place of 2 electives. Strategies classes are full-yearclasses.
Course Verification Form Students will receive a Course Verification Form in early May. WHAT’S ON THE FORM? Pre-AP courses if qualified GT courses if qualified Electives chosen Drop/Add section for any requested changes ALL forms must be returned to Curtis.
