Why worry about stakeholders? • Can influence what a business does • As they will be affected by the business, they will try to get the business to do what they want. • What does the owner want? • What do workers want? • What do suppliers want? • Sometimes stakeholders will want different things and this can cause conflict.

The Stakeholders • Group A – Suppliers • Group B – Local Community • Group C – Customers • Group D – Pressure Groups • Group E – Potential Employees • Group F – Local Government • Group G – Committee • In your groups; • Write down your ideas about the new theme park from your stakeholder perspective. Use the template and write down the arguments for and against the theme park. Decide on your overall perspective and justify it. • You will present your overall justification to the committee who will then make the decision as to whether or not the theme park will go ahead

  6. Team Workers • Everyone of you has a part to play. • You have one worksheet and one pen. • In pairs discuss the issues • In your groups discuss the issues and pass the pen and paper around to note down your ideas.

Group A – Local Suppliers • Think about: • What supplies the theme park would need • Where the theme park will get the building materials from • Where will they obtain their food supplies from for the restaurants and cafes. • What are the prices/quantities are they likely to need? • Local v National

  8. Group B – Local Community • Think about; • The effects of the theme park on the local community • Increased jobs • Increased traffic congestion • Affects on the wildlife in the peninsula • Local businesses – good or bad?

  9. Group C – Customers • Think about: • Prices the theme park will charge • Will there be reductions for local customers • Will it be easy to get to? • Parking facilities • Variety of rides

  10. Group D – Pressure Groups • Think about: • The pollution caused • The damage to the local wildlife • How will the river be affected? • What should the theme park owners do to help?

  11. Group E – Potential Employees • Think about: • How many jobs could be created in the local/national area • What types of jobs will be created • Do the local people have the relevant qualifications? • If not will they get training? • Skilled v unskilled

  12. Group F – Local Government • Think about: • The types of jobs that will be created • What the theme park will do for the local economy • How will other businesses be affected? • Taxes • Infrastructure isssues

Group G - The Committee • You will decide if the theme park will go ahead • You have the challenging task of thinking about the new theme park for the perspective of all the different stakeholders. • Go round the groups and see what they are discussing. • Try and think of potential counter arguments to throw at them.

  14. Extension Task • Ranking of Stakeholders • Imagine you are the theme park owners. • Decide on which of the stakeholders are the most important to keep happy. • List them in order of importance. • Explain why you have ranked them in that order.

Key Terms • Stakeholders – Anyone who has an interest in a business including employees, customers, owners, the local community. • Pressure Groups – Groups that make businesses be more environmentally friendly. For example Greenpeace • Local Community – People in the surrounding area of the business • Suppliers – A business that provides goods to another business • Local Government - The local council who makes decisions on local issues • The Committee - A group of people brought together to make a decision

Homework Questions • Think about the role play activity that you have just carried out. • Identify the different stakeholders that exist within a business • Describe the impact of business decisions on stakeholders using the theme park example • Consider reasons why stakeholders have conflicting interests. • Discuss each stakeholder group, what their objectives are and whether they can influence the business. • Make a judgement on which stakeholder groups have the most influence on the business
