  1. Qualcomm’s Mirasol Presentation by: Allison Crabb Traver Turney Matt Sears Stephen Dellinger

  2. Qualcomm • Established in 1985 in San Diego, CA. • Co-Founded by Dr. Irwin Jacobs • Qualcomm is the global leader for developing and delivering ground-breaking products and solutions.

  3. What Is Mirasol? • The next generation of flat panel displays • Inspired by the butterfly’s wings

  4. Key Words • Biomimetics: The study of the structure and function of biological systems as models for the design and engineering of materials and machines. • IMOD Technology: A new approach based on LCD technology. • MEMS, Micro-Electro-Mechanical System: The integration of mechanical structures with microelectronics.

  5. Features • Ultra-low power consumption  longer battery life • Superior Viewability  works in all lighting, even in the sun • Enhanced Readability  reduces eye fatigue • Robust Functionality  virtually not affected by the environment • Mechanical Durability  long operational life • Technical Compatibility  easy integration and adoption • Technical Flexibility  wide design and implementation options

  6. Inspired By Butterfly’s Wings • Butterfly wings reflect light in a way that specific wavelengths interfere with each other, which create nature’s most vivid colors. • By using this premise as the starting point for the new IMOD technology, Qualcomm mimics this nature of light in a new cutting-edge display technology, Mirasol.

  7. How Mirasol Works • Pixel elements consist of simple, tiny micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) comprised of two conductive plates: a thin film stack on glass substrate and a reflective membrane suspended below. • When bias voltage holds the reflective membrane in the open state, the subpixel reflects a specific color. • When applied voltage collapses the reflective membrane, all visible light is absorbed, making the element black. • To create a flat-panel display, many elements are grouped together as pixels or subpixels. Varying voltage across the display’s elements creates rich, detailed imagery.

  8. Efficiency of Mirasol Memory • Mirasol’s MEMS is called hysteresis. • Hysteresis allows it to maintain its state (open or collapsed) • Once in its state, it stays there with very low quiescent current. • This means that the display acts as a extremely power-efficient memory element, providing remarkable power savings over active matrix devices that continually refresh.

  9. Applications • Cell Phones • Gaming Devices • MP3 Players • Laptop and Desktop Monitors • Digital TV and DVD Player Screens • Medical Imaging • Automotive Navigation • Outdoor TVs • Outdoor Signage • Digital Camera and Camcorder Screens
