Original intent of the plans • Develop a systemized approach for: • Keeping data safe • Keeping data usable into the future • Documenting procedures for data continuity • Figure out just what the heck we were supposed to be doing.
Every network has produced a plan • National-level plan now in place
Five-year review and revision for first 12 networks approaching in 2010. • Do we want to change the approach? • How can we keep a plan current and relevant? (i.e., reflect reality) • How can we keep it manageable and realistic to maintain?
Survey this summer on DM Plans • Solicit ideas and recommendations from network staff (including biotechs, coordinators, others) • Determine: who uses plans or SOPs? How? • What’s working and not working? • Are they no longer plans and are now something else? • Would SharePoint be a good tool to use? We need a new model.
“Audits” Review data management methods and activities Ensure adequate and effective data management procedures are in place and are performed. Keep divergence within bounds
Make sure fundamental activities are practiced • Benchmarks determined by data managers • Survey Data Managers for ideas and opinions • Determine common denominators • Establish draft benchmarks and audit process • Solicit comments • Finalize • Set audit schedule
Examples of Benchmarks Backups with restore checks Documentation Posting of data to national systems QA QCWebsites Reporting
Finally… • New or different tools and techniques for data managers • SharePoint, blogs, wikis, webinars, others? • More formalized orientation and mentoring process for new data managers • Exploit and share individual areas of expertise
