  3. Why health and fitness? Overview: Child and adolescent obesity and weight control are among today’s top public health concerns. Approximately 9 million children over age six are obese and since 1980, the percentage of overweight girls ages 6–19 has more than doubled. (Source: Girl Scout Research Institute 2006)

  4. It’s not just exercise and diet . . . • Findings suggest that efforts to address this problem among girls that focus solely on nutrition or physical activity will miss the mark. • The study finds that girls today are using a varied and complex set of norms to define health. • For girls, being healthy is more than just eating right and exercising; it is also about feeling good about oneself, being supported by friends and family and appearing “normal.”

  5. Moms are important! Parents, and especially mothers, have the ability to strongly influence their daughters’ health habits, both positively and negatively. A mother’s weight, body image, attitude, and health habits are strong indicators of whether or not her daughter is overweight, satisfied with her body, physically active, and look to her mother for advice on healthy living.

Program Outcomes Indicators: • Girls will measure their BMI and track it over the course of the year reporting their status at the beginning of the year, every four months and at the end of the year. • Girls will set activity goals to reduce or maintain a healthy BMI and track their progress - reporting their status every four months and at the end of the year. #1 Girls will learn to decrease their (or maintain a healthy BMI).   7. Program Outcomes Indicator: Girls will set goals to increase physical activity and measure their progress over the course of the year through # of days that they are active per week. #2 Girls will increase their physical activity over the course of the year.

  8. Program Outcomes Indicators: • Girls will demonstrate that they can make healthy food choices. • Girls will record instances of healthy food choices. #3 Girls will make healthy food choices.

  9. Program Outcomes Indicator: • Girls will report # of times they were successful in getting a friend or family member to join them in physical activity. #4 Girls will recruit and inspire others to join their efforts to achieve a healthy lifestyle.

  10. Health & Fitness Umbrella Get Movin’ Girls • Council-wide: Camp Programs & G.S. Olympics • Regional Level: Events , Series & Fun Runs • Service Unit Level: Series & Program Activities • Troop Level: Individual Girls / Families

Events Pathway • 30 Regional Events focused on Health & Fitness. • 10 Fun Runs (more actually). • 1 Large Council-wide Girl Scouts Olympics – April 20, 2013 – Hattiesburg. • Funds provided to help hold the cost of most events down to $3-$10. Health & Fitness Programming is woven into all Girl Scout Pathways!

  12. Series Pathway • Regional Get Movin’ Girls Clubs for Moms & Daughters – 8 sessions in the fall and 8 sessions in the spring. • Health & Fitness focused curriculum for In-school series using the Journeys. Health & Fitness Programming is woven into all Girl Scout Pathways!

  13. Camp Pathway • Sports equipment for program activities: canoeing, kayaking, archery. • Geocaching & Letterboxing programs at G.S. facilities. • Financial assistance for summer camp. Health & Fitness Programming is woven into all Girl Scout Pathways!

  14. Troop Pathway • Fitness resources to support the Journeys for K-5. • Get Movin’ Girls Fitness Challenge. • On-line “Outdoor Fun Finder” • Rewards for Leaders & Service Units. • Training & Resources for Health & Fitness Champions to present at SU Meetings – take home activities for troops.

  15. Get Movin’ Girls Fitness Challenge • Get Movin’ Girls Fitness Challenge. Fee: $7 - pg. 23 • You can register at any time, but in order to complete the full incentive program, you must be registered by Sept. 30th. • Family participation is encouraged. • To earn incentives – and get a t-shirt you must pay the $7 registration fee.

  16. So how do we sign up? 3 Ways: • Paper Forms turned into the office. • Leader enters for troop on-line. • Individuals / families register themselves on-line.

  17. On-line Registration STEP 1: Click on the Get Moving Girls “button” on the GSGMS home page. Then select Register for the Get Moving Challenge in the Orange Link Box.

  19. Pay through Pay Pal with a Pay Pal account OR your credit/debit card.

  20. STEP 3: Sign-up for the Challenge and select your User Name & Password. This will activate your Fitness Tracker Login. You will receive and email with an activation link. Click onto the link and log on to the Fitness Tracker.

  21. STEP 4: Enter your height and weight and other data and . . .

  22. Get your results!

  23. STEP 5: Get Movin’! for 12 weeks and come back, log on and enter your new data. You will earn awesome awards and incentives and you will be healthier!
