Sleep • Why sleep? • to replenish chemicals • Growth hormones • Immune system
Sleep: Stages • Stage 1 (NREM): Light sleep (5-10 minutes in duration) • Stage 2 (NREM): Light sleep, preparation for deep sleep (5-15 min) • Stage 3 & 4(NREM): Deep sleep (5 – 15 min each) • Stage 5: REM (intense dreaming, rapid eye movement, 10 mins – 1hr)
Dreams • What is the purpose of dreams? • Used to understand the unconscious through symbols • used to discharge unacceptable feelings • Have hidden meanings • Information processing – what has occurred recently in our lives • Result of stressful experiences / intense learning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GGzc3x9WJU
Manifest vs. LatentContent Manifest Content of Dreams: • This is what we actually dream • E.g., I was flying from my house to the school Latent Content of Dreams: • This is the unfulfilled wish that the dream fulfills - E.g.,may symbolise liberation from something that's been troubling you.
Free Association Psychoanalysts examine dreams for their meaning. • Free association looks at the thoughts and emotions that are generated from dreams…not the actual content. • Psychoanalysts encourage patients to talk freely about all their dreams and then they 'tie the strings together' to sneak up on repressed emotions
Task: A Dream Journal • For the next week, you will keep a dream journal. • In your journal, you will try to give as much detail (who, where, what, etc.) about your dream experiences for each of the five nights. • At the end of the 5 night-period, bring your Dream Journal to class for analysis. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nmVzXxdUeU&feature=related
