History • Many cultures believed that dreams came from an outside source like gods or spirits. • Egyptian • Dreams carried messages from good or bad spirits • Dreams were opposites-happy dreams=disaster and nightmares=better times to come • When a person was having troubles in their life and wanted help from god, they would sleep in a temple, the next morning a priest, the Master of the Secret Things, interpret the dreams
Greek • Built special shrines to dream spirits • Dreams were the result of outside forces, such as the gods. • Morpheus passed on warnings and prophecies to people in their dreams • Hypnos was the god of sleep • Aristotle- • dreams are a recollection of the day’s events • dreams reflect a person's bodily health.
Christian • dreams were supernatural • over seven hundred mentions of dreams in the Bible • many beilieved that God revealed himself through dreams • Martin Luther- dreams are the work of the Devil
Chinese • looked to dreams for their next course of action. • Consciousness(soul) leaves the body during sleep and travels in other worldly realms • If suddenly awakened, their soul may fail to return to the body. For this reason, some Chinese are wary of alarm clocks.
Some Native American tribes and Mexican civilizations • Share the concept of a distinct dream dimension • Believed ancestors lived in their dreams and take on non-human forms like plants. • visiting and having contact with their ancestors. • helped to point their mission or role in life
Modern Ideas • Psychologists believe that dreams express the hidden workings of the mind. • Some believe that dreams are a way of dealing with conflict in life. • Sigmund Freud-dreams are wish fulfillments or expressions of repressed desires. • Carl Jung-the mind contains symbolism drawn on by all cultures in their dreams. “The Collective Unconscious” • Jung-dreams remind us of our wishes, realize the things we unconsciously yearn for, and help us to fulfill our wishes
Surrealism • Surrealists were fascinated with the unconscious. • Believed that Freud's theories on dreams, ego, superego and the id opened doors to the authentic self and a truer reality (the "surreal"). • They liked the possibilities of chance and spontaneity. • Elements • Deep space-endless • Atmosphere-fog, mist, steam, smoke • Bizarre size relationships • Combining elements that don’t belong together

Steps for photo composite Step 1: Collect images • Background • Landscape, interior • Focal point • People, animals, objects • Use old photos or negatives and scan • Scan objects Step 2: Design composition with the images you have • Focal point • Format • Vertical or horizontal (background will decide if vertical or horizontal) • Horizon line • Goes above or below center • Unity- repetition of art elements (repetition= 3)
Step 3: In Photoshop, create new document • 10.5 X 8 (horizontal) • 8 X 10.5 (vertical) Step 4: All images must have same resolution • Unclick resample • After changing resolution, re-click resample and three boxes • Change size in inches
Step 5: Select the background and paste on new document Step 6: Select objects To Change the size of an object • Transform • Move tool, check transform controls or Edit transform scale • Hold shift and drag from corner Step 7: Move objects around to get best composition Step 8: Add filters/change blend modes/adjust layer opacity/add texture
