  3. Website Updated every Monday or Tuesday http://townsendfchs.weebly.com/ Please use this as a tool to help you stay organized in this class. • If you miss a day of school, please check the website for updates and what you missed in class. This is your expectation

  4. Class Expectations • Do as the teacher asks • Come to class prepared with all supplies • Only use positive appropriate comments in the classroom • Follow all rules for composition

  5. Policies • There will be no particular participation grade received in this class; however, those students who volunteer will be remembered. This does not incorporate their Reading Grade (See Independent Reading) • When the bell rings students are to be in assigned seats. • Students should be prepared for class upon entrance to the classroom. Students are expected to bring all three textbooks daily. No return trips to lockers should be needed.

  6. At the end of class, students are to remain in their seat until the teacher dismisses them. • No food or drinks in class. The only exception will be bottled water and if food is provided by the teacher for the whole class. • Students will only be allowed to leave the classroom on an emergency basis…remember, the teacher determines what constitutes an emergency. To leave the room, students must have their own Floyd Central Planner signed and sign out on the sign out sheet.

  7. Absolutely no cell phones, MP3 players or other electronic devices are allowed! If these items are out in class or heard in class, the teachers will confiscate them and turn them over to administration. • Sleeping in class will not be tolerated. • ****I want more than anything for students to learn the material. If it takes a little longer to get an assignment turned in, but it is done correctly, I am okay with that. Inform me that it will be late and that you need an extension. However, assignments must be turned in on time to grade for each nine weeks. If materials are turned in on times, you will receive full credit. If it is late, one day, one week, or one month, one letter grade is taken off. Don’t take this for granted. Make it your intention to get materials in on time. School is about learning organization.****

  8. Points are accumulated from tests, quizzes, assignments, and different class projects. Grades are recorded on a point system that is transferred into a percentage. A comprehensive exam worth 10% of the final grade will be given at the end of the semester. A+ 100-97% A 96.99-93% A- 92.99-90% B+ 89.99-87% B 86.99-83% B- 82.99-80% C+ 79.99-77% C 76.99-73% C- 72.99-70% D+ 69.99- 67% D 66.99-63% D- 62.99-60% F 59.99- below

  9. Percentages Tests/Quizzes: 30% Ind. Reading: 10% Writing: 40% Homework: 20%

  10. Homework This comprises roughly 20% an English student’s grade each semester. Homework is to be completed and turned in on time. Not every assignment is taken for a grade; however the purpose of homework is not to improve your grade but give you an opportunity to extend your understanding of the material. Because there is not daily homework, it is important to do the homework in order to do better on the tests and quizzes.

  11. Writing • Final draft assignments comprise roughly 40% of an English student’s grade each quarter and include all in-class assignments and writing workshop pieces. • Writing workshop is time for writing and practicing the writing process of all kinds of writing. Students will be studying the skills and processes that are used to create various pieces, including biographical, literary response, persuasive, and research writing. • In order to work on skills for writing, students will be entering into a time of writer’s workshop on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At times these will be building blocks to a larger writing assignment or writing to be writing.

  12. Independent Reading Knowing the above statistic, I believe it is important that students do independent reading in conjunction with in-class work, even if that means we are reading a novel together as a class. Students will be expected to read at least one independent book and complete a project each 9 weeks. Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) time will be given on most Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Each Friday, a log will be written in their writers notebook about where they are currently with their independent book. There will be a participation grade given every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It is important that you get a book, finish it, and continue to do so each 9 weeks.

  13. Need your book by Friday! Actually… Let’s do by Monday because of all of this winter wonderfulness…

  14. Book Talk When you finish your book, you will talk about the synopsis, read from the book, and show an image that represents the theme. You may do this at anytime in the semester. On a Monday,Wednesday, or Friday, let me know that you are ready and we will do it before the 10 minutes of IR

  15. Remind 101 Remind 101 is a program that allows the students to receive text reminders directly from the teacher. As technology changes, it is important that teachers advance with technology. Students receive texts on an hourly basis and this is one way for them to be reminded of their assignments. Period 6: Text engper6mt to Period 7: Text engper7mt to 754-333-6903
