  2. FOCUS ON THE MAIN IDEA *The regions of the United States and the nations of the world depend on each other. VOCABULARY transportation interdependent globalization communication

  3. transportation- the moving of goods, people, or animals from one place to another. (p.81) interdependent- when regions rely on one another for goods, services, or resources. (p. 81) globalization- the process by which a business makes something or provides a service in different places around the world. (p.82) communication- the way that people send and receive information. (p.84)

  4. From Across the USA The days of mail delivery by horseback are long gone in the United States. Today a letter sent from the state of Louisiana can arrive in California overnight. How? Trucks, trains, ships, and airplanes provide transportation across the states. Why do we want to move goods across the states? Products grown in one state can be sent to people living in another state.

  5. Communication Today How do you communicate today with your friends and family members?

  6. No single region can produce everything that people in that region need and want. Each region depends on other regions for goods, services, and resources. What are some of the resources that Louisiana provides for other states?

  7. Around the World The regions on the United States are economically interdependent. But trade and commerce stretch much farther than the borders of our country. Most of the countries of the world are tied together economically. The making of your computer is an example of globalization. Globalization of businesses means that goods are produced using resources, raw materials, and services from several countries.

  8. COMMUNICATION Communication is the way that people send and receive information. Fast communication helps local, national, and world trade. Suppliers communicate with stores to tell them about available goods. Consumers communicate with businesses to tell them what they want. Today, people can communicate instantly by telephone, email, and texts. Computers allow companies to do business easily over long distances.

LESSON SUMMARY • Because no region can produce everything it needs, all the regions of the United States are economically interdependent. • The globalization of businesses means that goods are produced using resources, raw materials, and services from several countries. • Fast transportation and communication have made local and world trade easier.
