People Michael Jackson • Born: August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana • Death: June 25, 2009 • Lived in Indiana and California • Album thriller is the world's best-selling album • Became #1 stage performer and music artist of the 80's • Later in his years he underwent plastic surgery Mother Teresa • Born: August 27, 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia • Death: Sept. 5, 1997 • During her lifetime which she devoted to charity, she founded a Christian order, health clinics, orphanages, centers for the malnourished, rehabilitation centers, homes for alcoholics and drug addicts, treatment centers for AIDS patients, shelters for the homeless and battered women, and hospices for the dying in countries across the world • Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity • Pope John Paul beatified her in 2003

People continued… Wayne Gretzky • Born: January 26, 1961 in Brantford, Ontario • Greatest hockey player of all time • Played NHL hockey from 1980 to 1999 • In 1980, He became the youngest player ever to win the MVP award at age 19 • Gretzky scored 2,857 points on 894 goals and 1,963 assists • league's most valuable player 9 times • the first player to score 200 points in one season Ronald Reagan • Born: Feb. 6, 1911 in Tampico, Illinois • Died: June 5, 2004 in the Bel Air district of Los Angeles • Republican President of the United States from 1980-1988 • Wanted to: • reduce growth of national government • restore power of states in federal system • reduce government expenditures • expand the military and defense establishment • restructure foreign policy away from detente with Soviet Union • Became the governor of California and then later became "one of the best presidents of US history."

People continued… Harrison Ford • Born: July 13, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois • American actor who stared in many movies throughout the 80's • Became one of the most popular TV stars throughout the 80's and most of his movies were box office hits • Ford became a star with: • Star Wars (1977) • The Empire Strikes Back (1980) • Return of the Jedi (1983) • Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) • Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

Events continued… Exxon Valdez Oil Spill • 1989 • Left the port city of Valdez, Alaska heading towards Long Beach, California • Spilled 11 million gallons of oil into Alaskan wilderness • Killed thousands of animals • $5 billion in damage ordered by a jury to punish Exxon • Amount of money was reduced to $383 million by the Supreme Court in August 2008 President Ronald Reagan Elected • Became a Republican in 1962 • Ran for governor of California in 1966 and served two consecutive terms • Successfully ran against Jimmy Carter for president • Won 1984 election against Walter Mondale • He cut taxes, lessened people’s reliance on government, increased national defense, and succeeded in all of these things • Met with Mikhail Gorbachev and both eliminated nuclear weapons

Events continued… President Reagan gets shot • March 30, 1981 • Outside Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C • Someone was copying a scene from Taxi Driver and believed it would win Jodie Foster’s heart • The bullet barely missed Reagan’s heart The Space Shuttle Challenger • Launched at 11:38 A.M. on January 28, 1986 • Within 73 seconds, it broke up at a height of 9.3 miles and a speed of about 2,175 miles per hour • All seven members aboard the space shuttle were killed • The Challenger crew were the first Americans to die in space • The cause of this fatal disaster turned out to be a faulty seal on one of the Challenger's booster rockets • A tongue of fire escaped and the breach in the booster disrupted the external fuel tank and caused the space craft to break up

Events continued… • Later, MASA reported that the booster rockets had no sensors to warn of problems • Another issue was the low temperature on the day it was launched • the O-ring component that failed could not be relied upon if it was too cold • The mission had been rescheduled several times from the bad weather and delays • the warnings were ignored
