  6. 1980 • Failed attempt to recover hostages in Tehran • Mt. St. Helens erupts • John Lennon is assassinated • Ronald Regan becomes 40th president

  7. Ronald Regan(February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004) • Had a successful Hollywood career: radio, film and television actor • Governor of California from 1967 to 1975 • Nickname: the Great Communicator • The 40th President

Reganomics • “trickle down economics” • Lowering top income tax rates would spur economic growth → invest tax savings in business → creating jobs → increasing costumer spending →eventually increasing tax revenues • Congress passed a 3 year program to cut federal income taxes by 25% • By 1983 the inflation rate had dropped. Business revived. Stock market soared.

Iran-contra Affair • The Iran- contra affair was a political scandal in which the Reagan administration officials secretly facilitated the sale of arms to Isreal. • It was planned that Israel would ship weapons to Iran, and then the U.S. would resupply Israel and receive the Israeli payment. • They wanted to free american soldiers with this plan but The plan deteriorated into an arms-for-hostages scheme, in which members of the executive branch sold weapons to Iran in exchange for the release of the American hostages. • We still don’t know if Reagan knew about the arms sales or if he was unaware of this plan. Also we don’t know if the plan was motivated by Reagan’s desire to save the U.S. hostages. But this conflict did raise suspicions about Reagan during and after his presidency.

Collapse of the Soviet Union • Labor strikes in Poland threatened the Soviet control throughout the nation • Mikhail Gorbachev came into power • called for increased foreign trade • new era of Soviet history • wanted reduced military spending • Soviet citizens started to protest communist control • Satellite states took a stand against the Soviet Union and protested • Adopted a policy of Nonintervention • Soviets surrendered to Russian rule

End of the Cold War • The fall of the Berlin Wall signaled the end of the Cold War • The United States and the Soviet Union sign the INF treaty • stands for Intermediate-Range Nuclear Force treaty • signed to try and eliminate the use of medium range nuclear weapons in Europe • United states and Soviet relations cooled because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (1979-1980) • Soviet Union's adoption of Nonintervention ultimately ended the Cold War • The United States increased diplomatic, military, and economic pressures on the Soviet Union • "Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

  17. 1982 • All 9 planets align on the same side of the sun • First international day of peace, September 21. • Tylenol scare, 7 die of potassium cyanide near Chicago • On Nov. 13, thousands march then the Vietnam memorial is opened in D.C.

  18. 1983 • Supreme court declares local abortion laws unconstitutional • First female astronaut, on Challenger • Terrorist explosion kills 237 US marines in Beirut • “Crack cocaine was made in the Bahamas and soon introduced to the US • The “Just Say No” campaign begins

  19. 1984 • Regan/Bush elected for a second term • Summer Olympics in LA. Soviets boycott. • Reagan ends US role in Beirut by relieving peacekeeping forces.

  20. 1985 • Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader, had a policy of openness (glasnost) and reform (perestroika) • A joint American-French expedition locates the wreck of the Titanic. • In November, Reagan and Gorbachev meet at summit.

  21. 1986 • In January, the Challenger exploded • Major nuclear accident at Soviet Union’s Chernobyl power station • Approximately Seven million Americans join hands in "Hands Across America" • US introduces tax reform legislation • Smoking is banned on all public transport including trains, planes, busses and coaches

  22. 1987 • Gorbachev and Reagan signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty • In October, severe earthquake strikes Los Angeles, leaving 100 injured and six dead • Reagan says Iran arms-Contra policy went astray and accepts responsibility

  23. 1988 • In May, Reagan flew to Moscow. • Fires in Yellowstone Park. (1/3 destroyed) • Bush elected 41st president in November.

  24. 1989 • Bush declared a "War on Drugs." • Exxon Valdez Oil spilloccurred in Prince William Sound. • The East Germany government opened the Berlin wall on November 9 • On December 25 Gorbachev resigned as pres. of the Soviet Union and turned over control to Boris Yeltsin, the pres. of Russia

Ghost busters Caddyshack Indiana jones movies Airplane **Patriotic films** Ronald reagans crusade against communism was helped along by movies such as “Red Dawn” and “Invasion U.S.A.”. These movies glorified war and were even used to recruit for the military.

  31. 1980's Olympic Games • Celebrated in Moscow, Soviet Union. • US and many others boycotted games because of Soviet invasion in Afghanistan. • "Olympic Boycott Games" were held for countries that had boycotted the Olympics • Held in Philadelphia, PA. • Only 80 nations participated in Olympic games, smallest # since 1956. • As form of protest 15 countries marched in with an Olympic flag instead of their own. • Soviet Union swept Olympic games with 80 gold medals,69 silver, and 46 bronze.

Olympic Boycott and Cold War • 1979 Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to support unstable pro-Soviet government • This caused US to speak out in protest as they were allied with forces in Afghanistan and protested the spread of communism • US protest joined by Japan, West Germany, China, the Philippines, Argentina, and Canada. • Boycott had little impact on Soviet policy in Afghanistan.
