How people Survived: Soup Kitchens Private charities
Living conditions during the Depression: Foreclosures – many people lost their homes because they could not pay their mortgages.
People lived in “shantytowns” A.K.A. Hoovervilles
Hobos travelled the railways looking for work all over the country. Mostly men and boys.
Where? The Great Plains What was it? The farmland turned to dust for several reasons and was no longer productive.
Cause of the Dust Bowl: • Due to overproduction farmers left their fields uncultivated • Due to overproduction, crop prices fell – the barns were full. • Scant rainfall – farmers did not farm with irrigation like we do here in the valley. They relied on the rainfall. • The soil dried up. No nutrients in the soil. • It became a Dust Bowl.
The impact of the Dust Bowl: • People went broke and lost their farms. • They moved out of the area to find work. Many went West to California where they thought they could find work in agriculture. • This led to a new movement of people called the “Okies” – poor people from Oklahoma. • They came out in their cars with all their family and belongings.
