Homelessness • Struggling to pay rent/mortgages • Some would or could not move from their homes • Landlords needed eviction notices from the courts • Bailiffs would come • Eject nonpaying tenants • Pile belongings in street • Homeless people set up shacks on public lands • Called shantytowns, nicknamed Hoovervilles
Hobos • Mostly boys and young men • Searching for work or better life • Wandered the country • Walking • Hitchhiking • “Riding the Rails”
The Dust Bowl • Over-farming • Drought • Windstorms • Crop production decreased • Banks foreclosed on farms • Farmers moved to California • Okies CAUSES CONSEQUENCES
