Standard of Living • Middle Class went into poverty • Hard time paying for homes, cars, food • Moved into cheap housing- Hoovervilles for poorest • Lived on very little money • Didn’t buy new clothes for anyone but father • Desperate for work and money http://www.erroluys.com/HowAmericansHelpedEachOtherDuringtheGreatDepression.htm

Family Income • Below $1,500 a year for 12 million Americans • -below the poverty line for a family of 4 • - in todays figures- $15,000 • Most families had one working person • Older children may take the father’s place for income http://www.amistadresource.org/plantation_to_ghetto/the_great_depression.html

  4. Family Activities • Sunday morning radio shows • Told stories • Did anything that didn’t cost money • Family tensions were common • -short tempers • -fighting • -lack of confidence http://www.squidoo.com/depression-era-cooking
