Energy and Life • All cells need ENERGY for life. • Some things we use energy for are: • Moving • Thinking • Sleeping • Breathing • Growing • Reproducing
Energy and Life • The principle chemical compound used by living things to store energy is adenosine triphosphate(ATP).
Energy and Life • It consists of three parts: Adenine, Ribose, and 3 Phosphate Groups ADENINE 3 Phosphates RIBOSE
Online Activity • What is ATP used for? • Flower • Firefly • Lizard
Energy Storage & Release • ATP is used for: active transport, movement of cell organelles, and other functions (mitosis) • Glucose: sugar molecule stores 90 times more energy than ATP. Regenerates ATP.
Why do we use ATP? • Why not just get energy from sugar (glucose) directly? ATP consists of small units of energy. If you burn all at once – spontaneous combustion!
Why do we use ATP? • Analogy: Powerlines = sugar, Wall socket = ATP (small units of energy)
Follow-up Questions • What is the role of ATP in a cell? • How do autotrophs obtain energy? • How do heterotrophs obtain energy? • What are the similarities and differences between ATP and Glucose?
Photosynthesis Overview • Process by which plants use water, CO2, and energy from sunlight to make sugar and O2. • Chloroplasts are organelles that do photosynthesis.

In the photosynthesis light reaction: 1. What is water needed for? 2. What product is released at the end of the light reaction? 3. What two high energy molecules are produced by the light reaction? Used in the reaction when sunlight is present Oxygen ATP & NADPH
In photosynthesis the Calvin Cycle: 4. What is carbon dioxide needed for? 5. What product is made at the end of the Calvin Cycle? 6. What two low energy molecules are produced by the light reaction? Provides carbon to make sugar (C6H12O6) Sugar – glucose (C6H12O6) ADP & P, NADP+
