  2. Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Initiative Initiated in early 2000 First operational step was an assessment of the needs and capacities of 12 countries Regional Report

  3. The DPPI Aim: To foster good neighborly relations and stability through the exchange of information, lessons learnt and best practices in the field of disaster management To enhance cooperation between DPPI partners in view of EU enlargement and the process of Euro – Atlantic integration for SEE countries

  4. To support and encourage countries in the region to develop, adopt and/or enforce state of the art disaster emergency legislation, environmental regulations and codes designed to prevent and mitigate disasters in line with guidelines and practices accepted in the international community

  5.   6. How? Work hand-in-hand with international organizations, non-governmental organizations, networks to streamline activities and avoid duplication Overview of existing projects (related to DM in SEE) started but not continued within the Security Sector Reform (SSR) Project

  7. Examples: (with previous participation from Kosovo) Project on Disaster Management Training for SEE Seismological Network for SEE

  8. Possible model: Joint Fire-fighting Unit (BIH/Croatia/Serbia-Montenegro) …border crossing arrangements

  9. Challenges? • Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) and participation of many/most government institutions, bodies and private sector • Cooperation and coordination at all levels
