P.E.G.S. • Political, economic, geographic, and social characteristics are the foundations of ANY civilization. • The development of a society’s P.E.G.S. began when: • 1. Common languages developed • 2. People speaking the same language followed a leader • 3. Common customs and beliefs were formed • 4. People worked together to develop a city • 5. Sets of laws and rules were practiced in the city
In other words… Language + Leader + Customs and Beliefs + City + Laws =
Foundations of a Civilization • A civilization is a centralized society with developed forms of religion, ways of governing and learning. • Often civilizations shared parts of their society with other civilizations, which is called cultural diffusion • A civilization depends on a stable food supply, common government and a division of labor. • Division of labor is where different members of society do different tasks based on their abilities and the group needs.
Political The way people have a definite set of laws with a system of government and defining a citizen’s rights Characteristics: Government Leaders Rules and laws Taxes Wars/conflicts Citizen’s rights
Economic The way people use their resources to meet their needs. It is what is grown, bought, traded, used and sold Characteristics: money, taxes, products, goods, merchants, trade routes, common currency
Geographic • Early cultures differed because of their location and available resources. • HOW DOES WHERE YOU LIVE, AFFECT HOW YOU LIVE • Characteristics: • Mountains, lakes, rivers, oceans, valleys, temperature, natural resources, cities, deserts, plateaus, climate
Social • The way human society is divided into a structure of classesthat form a common language and system of beliefs • Characteristics: • language, culture, food, education, treatment of women, clothing, art, literature, values, RELIGION!!
