December 7th, 1941 “The Attack” • Surprise Attack on the United States • Sunday morning at 7:02 A.M. • Radar picks up planes • American planes coming from CA • 7:55 A.M. • 1st wave: 183 planes bomb the ships and planes • 2nd wave: An hour later, 167 planes • Midget subs modified for shallow waters

SUHUPU…Internal Summary • Directions: • Stand up, push your chair in and raise your hand. • On my command, find another student (not your best friend) with their hand raised. • When you find your partner, give them a high five, decide who will be partner “A” and who will be partner “B” and face me with voices off. • I will then post a question for you to answer. • On my command, partner A will tell partner B the answer to the question. • After 30 seconds, Partner B will then sum up Partner A’s answer. (“What I heard you say was…” • The process will then repeat for Partner B to give partner A the answer to a new question. • When we have all finished, direct your attention to me, and we will rotate to find a new partner by raising our hands. • We will repeat these steps 2-3 times depending on time. • Are there any questions?

  7. The Damage • 21/96 ships sunk or severely damaged • Planes at Hickam, Wheeler, and Bellows airfield • 188/394 destroyed • 159 damaged • 8 Battle Ships lost • Most notably: • USS Arizona: sank in 9 minutes, 1,177 dead • -Now a Memorial site • USS Oklahoma: rolled over, 429 dead

  8. …continued • 2,403 killed in 2 hours • However… • American Aircraft carriers not at port • Dominant ship in the war • 18/21 ships damaged would sail again during the war

  9. U.S. Declares War On Japan • December 8th, 1941 • “Sneak Attack” outraged FDR and Americans • FDR asks Congress to declare war on Japan • “Day that will live in Infamy” speech • 3 days later, Axis powers declared war against U.S.

  10. Aftermath • Japan woke the “sleeping giant” • Rather than breaking the U.S., Japan united the U.S. • Japan didn’t destroy resources in Hawaii • -Oil storage • -Repair yards • Americans sought revenge!! • “Remember Pearl Harbor”
