  2. Guiding Questions • What is Pearl Harbor? • Why did Japan attack Pearl Harbor? • What was America’s reaction to Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor? • How many people were killed and how many people survived? • How do soldiers and civilians remember the attack?

  3. What is Pearl Harbor? • Pearl Harbor is located in Hawaii on the Island of Oahu. • Pearl Harbor is a Naval Base for the United States Military • Had approximately 60 million people in 1941.

  4. Leading Events . . . . • Before Japan decided to attack Pearl Harbor, there were many events that lead to this. • In 1940, Roosevelt began to notice the aggressive moves Japan was making in the Pacific. • He limited the supplies that Japan could by from the United States. • He stopped sales of iron and steel. • Roosevelt also froze Japan’s financial assets in the United States.

  5. Leading Events Continued . . • Roosevelt also cut off oil shipments to Japan. • The Tripartite Act was signed by Japan with Germany and Italy. • It was a problem because America still lied neutral at the time.

  6. Attack on Pearl Harbor • December 7th, 1941 • Shortly after 7:00 in the morning • American radar noticed blimp coming in. • Officer said “Don’t worry about it.” when he was notified. • 180 Japanese warplanes were overhead of the Island. • The attack ended approximately at 9:45 in the morning

  7. Due to Japan desperately needing the raw materials they were pretty disappointed that the United States were taking these things away. Why did Japan attack Pearl Harbor?

  8. Why? • Yamamoto was the commander of the Japanese fleet and wanted to dominate the pacific. • He wanted to destroy the American’s fleet and in November of 1941 he added Pearl Harbor to his target list.

  10. How many killed? • 100 Japanese were killed. • 2,400 Americans • 1,178 were injured.

  11. Japan • Lost over 29 planes at Pearl Harbor • One large submarine • Five midget submarines

  12. America • 18 ships were destroyed • 8 battleships • 3 light cruisers • 161 American airplanes were destroyed • (Army: 74 and Navy: 87)

  14. Stories from soldiers • George McCartney Hunter kept a journal during the attack on Pearl Harbor • He was an officer of the U.S. Naval Reserve and was assigned to the USS West Virginia stationed in Pearl Harbor. • He says that Pearl Harbor was a sad sight.

  15. Hunter’s Story • Says that the General alarm went off and he ignored it and was in no hurry. When it suddenly went off again he heard a bombing noise. A friend stated “This is war!.” He said it was a tough time on the ship and that they needed extra people to convey the guns. He saw fires and explosions go off everywhere around the stationed area’s. He also stated everything Japan did came in waves. He said Pearl Harbor was “living hell.”

Marine Corporal E.C Nightingale’s Story • Was aboard the Arizona • Arizona was a ship with two armored decks and fire took over the entire ship. • The Arizona is still a memorial today • Nightingale’s states that he paid little attention to the first siren before the attack and then he heard the explosion. • They were informed they were being attacked and Nightingale could hear the guns fire.

  17. Continued • His crew and himself stood there and waited to be ordered around. • When he reached the first platform he saw his Second Lieutenant on the floor in blood. He saw he was dead and continued on knowing there was nothing he could do. He heard more explosions and saw everything in flames. There was no one else left but himself and everything was burned. He saw charred bodies everywhere. When he finally reached a beach he was taken into a shelter and safe.
