Junior year 2013-2014 • Attend local college fairs • Get involvedBoth at school and in the community • Meet with your counselor  • Take challenging classes at school • Improve or maintain GPA • Take career, personality, and interest inventories(ask me how!) • Create list of 6-8 colleges of interest-explore their websites • Take the ACT or SAT in the spring (Feb. or April) • Explore your interests through job shadowing, community service, and summer programs • Begin visiting collegesmanyoffer special days for juniors!

Senior Year-Fall 2013 • Discuss post-high school plans with counselor • General idea of an academic area or major of interest (mymajors.com) • Attend local college fairs & presentations • Create a master list of dates/deadlines • Apply to schools on your list (reach, within reach, and back-up options)

  6. Senior Year Fall 2013 (Cont.) • Visit your tops schools • Apply for local & national scholarships (scholarship list) • Take ACT or SAT again • Connect with college admissions counselors • Contact specialized departments on campus

  7. Senior Year-Spring 2014 • Complete the FAFSA between Jan. 1st and March 1st (fafsa.ed.gov) • Attend O’Hara’s Financial Aid Night in early January (TBA) • Review financial aid awards from all schools • Make your decision: May 1st is National Candidate Reply Date! • Submit your enrollment confirmation materials to reserve your place • Registration for classes/housing

  8. College Entrance Exams ACT & SAT • Both used for admission purposes • Scholarship opportunities • Class level placement – math or English • ACT Tests 4 subject area knowledge students learned in high school • SAT Tests aptitude for college-level coursework

  9. Test Preparation • Free test prep: actstudent.org, kaptest.com/hsevents, petersons.com, collegeboard.org, number2.com • Other options may come at cost: workshops, classes, etc. • *E-mail me for a list of options* • Counseling office has many resources available to students and families

College Connection via Schoologyaccess code: 8Z4XC-GKTFH http://www.schoology.com/group/19075825 Students (and parents) can: • Sign up for college visits • View scholarship announcements & list • Find out about local opportunities (i.e. workshops, shadowing, etc.) • Participate in the college give-a-way program • Reminded of upcoming deadlines

Starting the college search process… • Explore colleges based on student college ‘fit’ (i.e. location, cost, majors, size) *Bigfuture.org, petersons.com, collegeview.com* • Create a list of 5-10 schools Consider the requirements of schools (GPA/ACT min.) • Know the college deadlines (scholarship and application). • Schedule an appointment with the school counselor to go over college plans

College Visits • Visits occur from September-November and then again in the spring. • Students should sign up for these visits (College Connection) and take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions related to their needs. • Representatives are happy to help in the application process and answer very specific questions related to their school.

College Fairs • Exposure to a variety of post-secondary institutions, hear about the admissions process, and get info on financial aid. • ‘Questions to ask college representatives’ sheet • Upcoming college fairs in KC area: •  College Night at John Knox Pavillion • Monday, October 7th, 2013, 6:30 — 8:00 p.m. • Over 100 institutions represented •  NACAC's Kansas City College Fair 2013 (register at www.gotocollegefairs.com) • Thursday, October 10th, 5:00 — 8:00 p.m. • Friday, October 11th, 8:00 — 11:00 a.m. • Kansas City Convention Center •  Shawnee Mission College Clinic • Wednesday, October 16th, 2013, 6:30 — 8:30 p.m. • Shawnee Mission East High School • 7500 Mission Road Prairie Village, KS 66208

As your student considers different schools… • Admissions criteria for colleges: Challenging courses, GPA, ACT/SAT, Recommendations, School involvement, Essays, and Awards • Private vs. public colleges • Class Rank: After 2005, O’Hara no long ranks • Transcript: Student academic record (courses, GPA = 9-12) *JR year grades are most recent grades seen by admissions

College Application Process • Application components: -Common app (commonapp.org) or school-specific app (on school website) -High School Transcript -Application Essay and Resume (if required) -Teacher evaluation/recommendation -Secondary school report/ Counselor rec -Interview, portfolio, audition, etc. • **Always print and save a copy of the application**

Advice for parents • Attend financial aid presentations with student (TBA in early January) • Complete applications together • November register for pin number, which will help speed up FAFSA process (www.pin.ed.gov) • Go on trips to colleges together • Family meeting to discuss paying for college • Sit down together and prepare a list of what s/he is looking for in a college • Have regular college-related conversations • This can be a stressful process, try and take it one day at a time
