This Day in History: March 24, 1989- The Exxon Valdez runs aground on a reef in the Prince William Sound in southern Alaska causing the worst oil spill in U.S. History. March 24, 1765- Parliament passes the Quartering Act. March 24, 1976- Peyton Manning is born in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Transcendentalism and American Authors • This is the belief that people could transcend, or rise above, material things in life. • They believed people should depend on themselves rather than outside authorities. • Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Henry David Thoreau were important transcendentalists. • Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Walt Whitman were influential authors and poets in this era.
Second Great Awakening • This was a Christian renewal movement during 1790s and early 1800s. • Charles Grandison Finney was an important leader. • Believed each person was responsible for own salvation. • Should prove faith by doing good works. • These ideas angered some traditional ministers, like Boston’s Lyman Beecher. • Renewed religious faith of people throughout America.
