CurriculumArizona College and Career Ready Standards What do Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards mean for students? • The Arizona College and Career Ready Standards – English Language/Literacy and Mathematics help to prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in post-secondary education and training. • Clear standards help students understand what is expected of them. • Consistent expectations across states for all students ensure that Arizona students both nationally and internationally competitive. • Relevant content and application of knowledge through high-order thinking skills and questioning provide opportunities for students to prepare for workforce and higher education discussions and experiences. • https://www.kyrene.org/domain/3809
AZ Merit 2018-2019 http://www.azed.gov/assessment/parents/ Writing The writing portion will require students to read a few passages and then write about them. This type of task requires students to think deeper about topics and use evidence to support their thinking. Reading The reading portion will be administered in two parts. This will ensure students have ample time to read and answer questions. The test will also contain editing tasks to measure student awareness of fundamental skills like spelling and grammar. Math The math portion will be administered in two parts. This will ensure students have ample time to read and answer questions. The test will ask questions to check a student’s conceptual understanding of math as well as their procedures skills.
English Language Arts Goal: Our goal is for students to become capable readers and critical thinkers. Students are taught to read widely and deeply from among a broad range of high-quality, increasingly challenging literary and informational texts and use context clues to make connections and draw inferences. They are reading for meaning and a deeper understanding. Instructional Focus Groups – differentiated instruction to teach the focus skills. • characters, setting, plot, inferences, theme, point of view, main idea, summarizing, compare/contrast This year reading instruction will be integrated to include non-fiction text related to our content areas, fiction selections, and literature studies.
