EAST ProjectTeam C Network Mapping of the CEC building Todd Hefner Team Leader Rhonda Tindell Secretary • Kaytie Hunt • Layout & Design • Ashley Christian • Team Member
Our Objective The objective of our project was to map the network connections from every computer in each CEC classroom to their switch board port, and each switch board to their patch panel port, and from each patch panel to the server. The map would aid in pin pointingproblem computers or switch boards inthe CEC building so the Tech staff could address the situation quickly without having to search for the problem computer manually.
We were a little Intimidated Okay… A LOT Intimidated…
This is a simple Diagram to show how computers connect in the order we had to figure it out for our map. Port1 Port2 Server Switch Board Patch Panel Port3 Port1 Port1 Port4 Port5
Making the Sketches Todd made paper sketches of each room’s computer layout . This was used so we could document the computer number and it’s port number when we were doing the LAN test’s on the network cables. We used the sketches when we went to make our floor map of the entire CEC building in Microsoft Visio.
The Equipment • We used a LAN Solution Network Tester. • The LAN Solution Network Tester is a jack identifier, cable tester, and a PING tester all in one. This is Casey trying to figure out how the heck this things works..
Our Work In Action It took many hours of hooking up the equipment to each and every computer cable to make a sketch of the Network. Above: Rhonda is Hooking up the LAN tester to each computers network cable to figure out what computer went to which port on the switch board in the room. Left: Todd is hooking up The LAN tester to the cables under the CEC help desk to figure out which room’s switch board went to which port on the patch panel…
Learning Visio • Microsoft Visio 2007 is a program that allows you to create visual diagrams that display data, to better communicate information at a glance. • Floor plan blue prints • Flow charts • Electrical and plumbing maps • Network maps • And much much more!!! • None of us had any experience in Microsoft Visio, so we didn’t know what we were in for. • It ended up being a lot easier than we originally thought it would be.
Mapping in Visio • Although mapping in Visio turned out to be not as hard as we originally thought, it was still very time consuming and tedious work. We had to make each room exactly as it looked. • Tables • Desk • Computers • Printers • Switch Boards
Technology We Used LAN Solution Network Tester Microsoft Visio 2007 Microsoft Word2007 Microsoft PowerPoint2007 Canon Powershot A560 HP Plotter Printer
Later Improvements Next Semester, some of the team members will continue mapping the computer network system throughout the entire EACC Campus. With continued use and experience with Microsoft Visio, visual improvements will be made to the maps along with more advanced features.
Problems We Encountered • The first problem we encountered was wondering if we should take on mapping the entire campus. As a team we decided that the CEC building would be a good starting point for this semester. • We didn’t know where to start!! • This is when we turned to the help of the Technical staff of EACC to guide us through the process of where to begin mapping the network. • We didn’t know how to work the LAN Solution Network Tester. But with a little reading and help from the staff we were able to get started.
Technical Support • The EACC Technical staff guided and helped us when we began sketching the map of the CEC network. • Cathy McMasters – Lab Supervisor • Kenneth White –Director of Computing
Conclusion/What We Have Learned • What we now know how to use: • LAN Solution Network Tester • Microsoft Visio 2007 • We also came away with a better knowledge of how a computer network is setup, along with how time consuming and complicated it can be. • We now have a higher respect for the people that work in computer networking everyday.
Thank You • We would like to thank Mrs. Feagin for the opportunity to work with the technology that EAST provides for us, and for your hard work that you put into getting EAST at EACC… It’s a rare occasion that we as students get to work with the advanced software and technology that we have here. I hope future students recognize the opportunity they have at their fingertips right here at EACC. It is a privilege to learn and work with the same technology that professionals of mega businesses and corporations work with everyday all around the world.
