What is animal behavior? • Anything an animal does in response to a stimulus (change) in its environment. • 2 Kinds • Innate behavior- inherited behavior, you carry it in your genes. • Learned behavior- changes with practice or experience. *** One things that makes animals special is that they can LEARN!
“It would seem that grooming one another is very important in maintaining social order.”
Innate Behavior – 2 types • 1. Automatic- simple, quick, no conscious control, reflex behavior Examples: • Toad’s tongue flips out to get an insect • Fight or flight response if scared • Moving your hand away from the hot stove ****Response!
2. Instinct • Instinct- more complex innate behavior 1.Courtship- male spider gives gifts to the female, flash a pattern of lights 2. Territoriality- defend or mark it; some use pheremones (chemicals that communicate info to other individuals of the same species)
Instinct 3. Aggression- growling to deliver message of keep away 4. Hierarchies- , pecking orders, lion prides, alpha male in chimps
Instinct 4. Circadian rhythm- 24 hour light regulated behavior (sleep/wake)
Instinct 5. Migration - instinctive, seasonal movement of animals
Instinct 6. Hibernation- go into inactivity during cold, winter months 7. Estivation- become inactive during intense heat periods
Learned Behavior • Habituation- Learning from repeated stimulus • Horse ignores car sounds • You get used to the feel of clothes on your body
Learned… • Imprinting- critical social attachment; takes place at certain time period in animal’s life; irreversible • Ex. Ducklings follow mother
Learned… • Trial and Error- learn from mistakes • Ex. Try different keys to unlock door • Ex. Practice shooting a basket until your shot improves
Learned… • Conditioning- learn by association EX: Dog salivates to dinner bell (Pavlov’s conditioning)
Learned… • Insight- highest form of learning many methods to achieve. Ex. Solving math problems you have never seen- EOC’s!
So what is a tropism? • Tropism- a plant’s response to any environmental stimulus • Light- Phototropism • Gravity- Geotropism
So what is a taxis? • Taxis- the movement of an animal toward or away from any stimulus • Light- phototaxis ex. Euglena • Chemicals- chemotaxis • Gravity- geotaxis
