  2. What Are Rainbows? Rainbows occur when “white” light, usually from the sun, passes through a prism (raindrops) and refracts and splits. There are many myths about the rainbow and almost all of these are fake.   7. White Light and Prisms Sir Isaac Newton discovered that rainbows can be made through prisms. Rainbows can’t be formed in the winter because the prisms are frozen. “White light” actually already has all or the colors a rainbow has before it goes through a prism, we just can’t see them yet.
