REXTRAP plans for 2005 And future developments Pierre for the REX TEAM, REX’s day, 11/03/2005
Current status • The trap is currently operational. • The cage has been cleaned by Ivan and Romain • the turbo pumps have been greased by Sophie • the power supplies resources are going to be well under control (see talk of Nicolas) • - A shortcut of a trap electrode had to be fixed in the cross piece in front of the magnet • efficiencies of 30-40% have been obtained with the new CS. We should reach soon 50% • the power regulation from Mike behaves the right way. Some more tests needed • But: • The DDS module has one channel which is broken. This quite fragile module gives the voltages of the cooling excitation. Some redesign? • The control system is in its commissioning stage (cf Romain’s presentation). Some improvements to foresee? • The long standing sparking problem has to be definitely fixed • the vacuum automat still doesn’t work fully properly • the balloon won’t be connected this year • the tests for the beam preparation of this year’s beamtime have to be started
Tentative schedule 1) Labview CS commissioning. February-March-April. Not 100% time consuming 2) Rotating wall cooling tests: emittance measurement. Possibly end of March / beginning of April - 1 week 3) Change of buffer gas: Ar cooling. 2 days mid April 4) Change of buffer gas: tests with He. 3 days mid April 5) Tests with Li from REXTRAP ion source, light ions cooling. One week in May 6) May October: REX operation according to the ISOLDE schedule 7) Mass resolving power tests: some tests between July – August (summer student time) Some preliminary tests in May could be foreseen. And the WITCH tests that could be done in autonomy
Future developments • Mass resolving power of the trap • Tests needed. Implementation of a new excitation scheme – 6/9 months of a PhD • Conclusions on the rotating wall cooling tests. Still some emittances to be measured • 1 month of a PhD – article? • Development of the molecular beam breakup techniques – 2/4 months. A collaboration with theoreticians could be helpful • Improving the typical efficiency of the trap. Quite careful studies (5-10 months) by simulation and tests for • -lowering the magnetic mirror effects • Implementing a more efficient cooling excitation • New differential pumping scheme at the trap. 1/3 months. More efficient trapping scheme. Use of He as a buffer gas. • Beam diagnostics improvements. Beam identification after the trap - 3 months.
REXTRAP R&D: The manpower issue • Several tracks are pursued • Modification of the current position of Romain PhD? • Doctorate students program at CERN/ Marie Curie applications • One application to the Austrian program
