  2. John Steinbeck The Pearl (1947) 87 pp Kino, a poor fisherman, and his wife need to pay for a doctor to treat their young son. Kino discovers an enormous pearl and wants to sell it to pay the doctor’s fee. When the town finds out about this treasure, they threaten his family, try to steal it, and are even willing to kill for it. Kino must decide if he can protect his family from what he thought was his great fortune.

  3. Paul Fleishman Whirligig (2009) 133 pp When sixteen-year-old Brent Bishop inadvertently causes the death of a young woman, he is sent on an unusual journey of repentance, building wind toys across the land.

  4. Paul Zindel The Pigman(1968) 166 pp When sophomores John and Lorraine played a practical joke a few months ago on a stranger named Angelo Pignati, they had no idea what they were starting. Virtually overnight, almost against their will, the two befriended the lonely old man; it wasn't long before they were more comfortable in his house than their own. But now Mr. Pignati is dead.
