  2. Two Purposes of LaTAAP: • Provide new teachers with a planned program of leadership and support from experienced educators. • Demonstration of competency in the Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching, which are the teaching standards that form the assessment criteria.

  3. Information and Details • Visit http://www.louisianaschools.net, which is the Louisiana Department of Education webpage. • Click on the “Professional Development” tab at the top of that page, and then on LaTAAP.

Documents for YOU: • Guide for New Teachers – everything you need to know about your beginning your teaching career in Louisiana • Bulletin 1943 – the policy which governs the new teacher assistance and assessment program. • Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching – the standards for all teachers in Louisiana.

  5. Overview of LaTAAP Activities • Semester 1: Mentoring • Semester 2: Mentoring • Semester 3: Mentoring/ Assessment • Semester 4: Mentoring/ Growth/ Assessment

  6. Semester 1: MENTORING • Attend Orientation • Receive Mentor Assignments • Sign Mentor/New Teacher Agreement • Complete Needs Assessment • Develop Action Plan(s) and Focused Coaching • Collect Artifacts

  7. Semester 2: MENTORING • Conduct mini-observations • Conduct Advisory observations • Create Growth Plan • Collect Artifacts

  8. Semester 3: MENTORING/ASSESSMENT • Conduct Full Observations • Assemble and Submit Portfolio • Evaluate Portfolio • Recommend Certification • Attend Team Meeting • Develop Growth Plan

  9. Semester 4: MENTORING/ GROWTH/ ASSESSMENT • Achieve Growth Objectives • Review/Revise Growth Plan • Conduct Observations • Redevelop Portfolio

Data Collection Methods • Effective spring 2004, the LaTAAP data collection methods are: a new teacher portfolio and classroom observation. • Both of these instruments are designed to collect information directly related to the Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching (LCET) • New teachers must achieve competent (2) rating on the eleven components of LCET.

Benefits for the New Teacher • Feedback regarding planning, classroom, and instructional strategies • An in-depth understanding of LaTAAP • Additional in-class observations with feedback in relation to the LCET • Positive attention, support, and encouragement • Reassurance that he/she is developing professionally

In the Future… • Attend professional development workshops • Meet regularly with your mentor • Establish a network of teacher “buddies” to lean on when needed • Join professional organizations • Check the EBR and Louisiana DOE webpages often for updates • Look into Take One! and National Board Certification
