  1. STARTER Mind Map! Think of as many uses / facts as you can about copper. What do you know already?

  2. Title: Copper LO: Find out the properties of copper and how it is extracted from its ore.

  3. Can Copper

  4. Can Malleable Copper Conducts ___well Decorative Conducts _______well

  5. Because copper is more/less (?) reactive than carbon we can reduce it with carbon. Copper ore is: CuCO3 – copper carbonate, what will the products of the reaction be?

  6. Smelting This is where we heat our copper ore (malachite) very strongly in air. This thermally decomposes copper carbonate (malachite) to make _______ copper carbonate  ______ + ________ Copper oxideCarbon dioxide

  7. We can then react copper oxide with sulphuric acid to make copper sulphate solution and then extract the copper by using electrolysis. This produces purer copper. Task: Use electrolysis to extract and collect copper from copper sulphate

  8. When we’re doing experiments we need: Goggles on Standing up Hair tied back WORKING SENSIBLY Bags under desks

  9. Alloys Bronze and brass. Bronze = copper + tin Brass = copper + zinc

  10. Plenary: DIY Quiz… Think of 2/3 questions from the chemistry/biology GCSE to test the class on!
