的de = possessive particle or descriptive particle • 我的wo3de=my • 你的ni3de = your • 他的ta1de=his • 她的ta1de=her

照片zhao4pian4=picture;photo • A: 那是你的照片吗？ Na4 shi4 ni3 de zhao4pian4 ma? Is that your photo? • B: 是啊！这(那)是我的照片。 Shi4 a! Zhe4 (na4) shi4 wo3 de zhao4 pian4. Yes! This (that) is my picture.

爸爸ba4ba=dad, father • 我(的)爸爸是老师。 Wo3 de ba4ba4 shi4 lao3shi1. My dad is a teacher. • 小张的爸爸也是老师。 Xiao3Zhang1 de ba4ba ye3 shi4 lao3shi. Little Zhang’s dad is also a teacher.

妈妈ma1ma=mom, mother • 我（的）妈妈是老师。 Wo3 de ma1ma shi4 lao3shi1. My mom is a teacher. • 我（的）妈妈是美国人。 Wo3 ma1ma shi4 Mei3guo2 ren2. My mom is American.

个ge =measure word for person, individual thing • 三个人san1ge ren2=three people • 五个美国人wu3 ge Mei3guo2 ren2 =five American • 这四个日本人是我（的）朋友。 Zhe4 si4 ge Ri4ben3ren2 shi4 wo3 de peng2you3. These four Japanese people are my friends. • 那个人是谁？Na4 ge ren2 shi4 shei2? Who is that person?

女 nv(Ü)3 =female • 她是女人，我是男人。 Ta1 shi4 nv3ren2, wo3 shi4 nan2ren2. She is a woman; I am a man.

孩子hai2zi=child • 这个孩子是谁？ Zhe4 ge nv3hai2zi shi4 shei2? Who is this child? • 女孩子 (nv3hai2zi)=girl

谁shei2= who, whom • 你是谁？Ni3 shi4 shei2? Who are you? • 这三个女孩子是谁？ Zhe4 san1 ge nv3hai2zi shi4 shei2? Who are these three girls?

她 ta1=she; her • A: 她是谁？ Ta1 shi4 shei2？ Who is she? B: 她是我朋友。她叫Abby. Ta1 shi4 wo3 peng2you3. Ta1 jiao4 Abby. She is my friend. She is called Abby.

姐姐jie3jie=older sister • 这是我的姐姐。 Zhe4 shi4 wo3 de jie3jie. This is my older sister. B: 我有三个姐姐。 Wo3 you3 san1 ge jie3jie. I have three older sisters.

男孩子nan2hai2zi=boy • 男nan2=male • 孩子hai2zi=child • 这个男孩子是高先生的。 Zhe4 ge nan2hai2zi shi4 gao1 xian1sheng1 de. This boy is Mr. Gao’s. • 男厕所nan2 ce4suo3 = boy’s toilet • 女厕所nv3 ce4suo3=girl’s toilet

大哥 da4ge1=eldest brother • 你是大哥吗？ Ni3 shi4 da4ge1 ma? Are you the eldest brother?

儿子er2zi=son • 他是我(的)儿子。 Ta1 shi4 wo3 de er2zi. He is my son. • 他是我大哥的儿子。 Ta1 shi4 wo3 da4ge1 de er2zi. He is my eldest brother’s son.

几ji3=(1) how many(2) some; a few • 你家有几个孩子？ How many kids does your family have? • 高先生有几个孩子。 Mr. Gao has several children.

口kou3=measure word for number of family members A: 你家有几口人？ Ni3 jia1 you3 ji3 kou3 ren2? How many people are there in your family? B: 我家有六口人。 Wo3 jia1 you3 liu4 kou3 ren2. There are 6 people in my family.

哥哥ge1ge=older brother A: 你有几个哥哥？ Ni3 you3 ji3 ge ge1ge? How many brothers do you have? B: 我有四个哥哥。 Wo3 you3 si4 ge ge1ge. I have four brothers.

两liang3=two • 两张照片Liang3 zhang1 zhao4 pian4 = two pictures • 两个美国人liang3 ge Mei3guo2ren2 =two Americans • 两个朋友 liang3 ge peng2you =two friends • 这两张照片很美。 Zhe4 liang3 zhang1 zhao4pian4 hen3 mei3. These two pictures are pretty.
