Program Overview • The Fulbright Specialist program promotes educational and professional linkages between the U.S. and South Africa. • Grants are awarded to qualified U.S. faculty members and professionals to engage in short-term, collaborative, 2-6 week projects at South African universities and other higher education institutions. • Your institution can select a candidate from the thousands of pre-approved, highly qualified U.S. scholars and professionals in 26 academic disciplines and numerous specializations on the Fulbright Specialist Program roster. • It takes a minimum of two-months for ECA in Washington DC to select a scholar already on the roster and three months if not on the roster. • Scholars have a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in their field, and professionals have recognized professional standing and accomplishments.
Program Funding • The South African host institution funds the in-country costs, including lodging, meals and program related transportation. • The U.S. Department of State provides international airfare and a stipend for the Specialist.
What does a Fulbright Specialist do? • Conducts needs assessments, surveys, institutional or programmatic research at South African post-secondary academic and other institutions. • Takes part in specialized academic programs and conferences in conjunction with other scheduled activities. • Consults with administrators and instructors of South African post-secondary institutions on faculty development. • Presents lectures at the graduate and undergraduate levels. • Participates in or leads seminars or workshops at South African post-secondary, academic and other institutions
Develops and/or assesses academic curricula or educational materials at South African academic institutions. • Conducts teacher-training programs at the post-secondary level. What does a Fulbright Specialist do?
