It’s Not Class, It’s Not Math, It’s Power Math Camp! An Innovative Way to Help Math Students with Developmental Education Presented by: Lily Lough, Chris Mims, Kyoko Olson, & Shannon Ruth
Why the need for Power Math Camp? • National educational research indicates higher attrition rates for students who spend more time in remedial coursework (Boylan, 2008) • Only 54.5% of students in developmental math classes are successful
What is Power Math Camp • A free intensive math workshop to: • Prepare students for high-stakes placement test • Help students refresh math skills • Help students solidify math concepts for subsequent classes • Reduce math anxiety
Student Population • Participants for the Power Math Camp consisted of two groups of students. • GateWay math students • LIFT for Success Program students • The LIFT for Success Program is a both a summer bridge and long term mentorship program for students transitioning into college from PUHSD
Key Players • Math Instructors • Math Tutors • Administrative Assistant • Program Coordinators(LIFT) • Director of Learning Center
Power Math Camp Cost • January 2013 (the first camp) $902 • 3-hour session, 4 days • 2 tutors • 22 hours of initial prep time ($370) • LIFT Power Math Camp, July 2013 $3,135 • 2.25-hour session, 4days/week, for 3 weeks • 2 groups • 1 instructor and 3 tutors • 21 hours of initial prep time ($510)

What the data says about impact on students • January 2013 PMC: • 83% of participants who went on to take MAT 09X were successful. • 82% of participants who went on to take MAT 12X were successful.
What the data says about impact on students • July 2013 LIFT PMC: • Before camp, 90% of students placed in MAT 08X • After camp, 49% tested into a higher course • Of the 49%, a strong 86% tested 2 – 3 classes higher
Qualitative Survey Results • From PMC with emphasis on building confidence to enter next class, student survey results included comments like: • “It is good to brush up on what you have already learned.” • “Power Math Camp helped me a lot with being prepared for the class.” • From PMC with emphasis on reviewing to re-take placement test, student survey results included comments like: • “The power math help me refresh on some things I had forgotten”
Looking Towards the Future • Recommendations • Effective marketing strategies – get the word out! • Tracking students after they participate in PMC to see how it contributes to students’ long-term success • Buy-in from math faculty • Reserve class seats for students who test higher • Connections with campus resources including Career Center, Testing Center, advisement, etc. to let students know about Camps
