25 ways to use the Masarangprojects of Indonesia in geographical education Sustainable development projects for the 21st Century
Who we are? • Alex Murchie • Head of Humanities, Victoria Shanghai Academy • Chris Durbin • English Schools Foundation • Hong Kong
A Partnership • ESF and other International Schools– a capacity to deploy experienced, international minded, imaginative and effective educators from 21 schools and kindergartens; • Masarang – empowers local communities; promotes reforestation; protects biodiversity whichprovides a network of environmental projects and ‘rich stories’ in Asia, Europe and Indonesia and Hong Kong in particular;
Why are we here? • To share with you a ‘hopeful’ project for change; • To give you ideas for teaching and learning; • To make connections with people striving for sustaining biodiversity in Asia; • To ask you to reflect on ‘progression’ in citizenship, education for sustainability and geographical education.

Fundamental principles • All teachers are teachers of language – and geographers have many opportunities; • Case studies need to be more meaningful – helping students to connect with places and explore their own and others values; • Learning to read photographs needs to be an active process; • Description is NOT a lower level skill – it is different;
The potential • Learn about inspiring environmental stories; • Learn about Asia – the fastest growing and developing economies – maximizing pressure on biodiversity; • Visit the project – Tasikoki, Yogyakarta, Borneo • Engage in transdisciplinary projects and support for a hot bed of biodiversity; • Make a difference…..
