Argentine ATCOs • 875 throughout the country • 550 in charge of international operations • 80 rated levels 4 and 5 • aged 18 to 30 100 ab-initio • aged 25 to 45 310 licensed • aged 45+ 140 licensed Centro de Capacitación, Instrucción, Perfeccionamiento y Experimentación - Argentina
Reasons: • "I have been an ATCO for thirty years now and phraseology has been enough” • "I cannot attend classes because the CAA doesn't allow me to attend within the working timetable". • “To get my LPR rating will mean more work for me” • “We are running out of personnel, which means more workload for us. On top of this, we have to attend English classes? No way!” • “My shift schedule has been prepared without respecting my English classes timetable.” ICAEA – Paris 2013
What’s the message behind these reasons? • Those who are supervisors have a low level of linguistic competence, so they fear to lose respect from their subordinates. • They fear to be replaced by younger controllers, with higher levels of the language. • Those who have never studied a language before feel it is an impossible goal to reach. • They fear to expose their weaknesses in front of their subordinates or peers • They fear to be loaded with extra work for just managing the language.
