Thirst for Change Katy Harris and Laura Bigoni 11 February 2012
Why now? MDG 7 target: • To halve the number of people without access to safe drinking water and sanitation by 2015 • Safe drinking water On track BUT will still leave 672 million without access • Climate change threatens to make this situation worse. • Water will be more scarce. • Rising temperatures will affect water quality and increase the spread of disease. • Extreme weather events could devastate existing water and sanitation systems.
Access to sanitation 30 years off track 200 years for sub -Saharan Africa Political and financial neglect is at the heart of the problem
We want the G8 to: • Ensure MDG 7 is met: make real political and financial commitments • Turn these promises into reality: back the Sanitation and Water for all initiative • Check progress is made:David Cameron to prioritise this under his 2013 Presidency
