The Thirst Project Region Training Conference 2016 Name, Position
The Thirst Project • Mission: To build a socially-conscious generation of young people who end the global water crisis. • Works with students to raise awareness of the global water crisis • Raises money funds freshwater wells and equipment to provide clean water to end the water crisis • Newest service partner of Key Club International
The Thirst Project History • Founded by Seth Maxwell on May 9th, 2008, in Southern California • The idea began when Seth and a small group of friends handed out water bottles to the public, while spreading information about the water crisis. • From the water bottles, $1,700 was donated to build their first freshwater well. • Schools began inviting the college students to speaking events, and the dream of the Thirst Project began.
Why Water? • Safe drinking water lowers disease rates (HIV, malaria, cholera, dysentery, etc.) • Having accessible, clean water reduces travel time to collect water. • On average, the journey for water is 3.75 miles • Women experience fatigue, dehydration, and miscarriages • Children are unable to receive an education • With water, communities can become agriculturally sustainable.
Achievements • Built and founded projects in 13 countries; currently active in 7 countries • Swaziland, India, Uganda, Ethiopia, El Salvador, Kenya, and Colombia • Completed 920 water projects and counting • Raised over $8 million, of which 100% has been used to build water projects • Over 300,000 contributing students
