  1. 10 Most Effective Shiitake Mushroom Cultivation Techniques

  2. People grow shiitake mushrooms commercially as well as a hobby. This prized variety has a delicious taste and texture and is also used to cure diseases. There are several different techniques for producing Shiitakes that provide a good harvest. However, shiitakes can be grown both indoors and outdoors. Though there are traditional cultivation methods, some form of solid-state fermentation is used by mushroom industries all over the world. The following post is an overview of some of the methods of cultivating shiitakes.

  3. Growing outside on woods Fresh hardwood of many species can be used to prepare the log though oak is the best. The substrates should be 3-5 inches in diameter and about 3½ feet in length. For inoculation, many holes are drilled along the length and filled with spawns of shiitakes and sealed with soft wax. The substrates are kept diagonally, covered to maintain humidity and inspected for contamination. It is soaked to induce fruiting. When significant spawn run is seen throughout the log, it is considered ready. However, there are companies that supply fresh Shiitake Logs for growing mushrooms.

  4. Artificial log • The conventional technique of growing Shiitake Logs is expensive and challenging in terms of getting the substrates and lying yards. For this reason, hardwood chips and sawdust filled in polythene bags serve as an artificial log. • It is a highly productive option and can be done in buildings. By controlling the climate, year-round production is possible.

  5. On paddy straw • One of the great options of growing shiitakes is on straw. In this method, the substrates are treated with heat or lime. Then they are inoculated and packed into plastic tubes for fruiting. • At this stage, one must wait for three weeks before placing the mushrooms in the right fruiting environment. It is then harvested, the bags are allowed to rest and then again it is harvested after three weeks.

  6. Sawdust spawn on logs • This is one of the easy ways of growing shiitakes. To begin with, one should take a 1-foot long log and then put sawdust spawn at the underside. After that, another log should be taken and spawn should be put between the two and attached. • Then another layer of spawn is provided at the top and capped with a 2-inch disk of wood. The incubation period is the first two months and then they are allowed to rest so that the mycelium can grow.

  7. Indoors with the growing kit The kits are very easy to use and are affordable. The fruit very fast taking about 10 days and produces for about three months. At first, the kits are soaked in water for about four to five hours. The blocks are then kept outside in a shady place and then sprayed with a hose. Finally, after 10 days the shiitakes become ready to be harvested.

  8. Composting • In phase, I, straws, manure, and other components are mixed together to make heaps that are very large. After that water is added to the heaps and mechanical compost turning machines are used to thoroughly mix the components. • With the help of the machine, the composts are then arranged into long stacks. In phase II, the composts are loaded in the growing containers. Hot air is circulated around the growing containers in different temperatures in a building and the beds eventually get ready for mushroom cultivation.

  9. Conclusion Whichever technique is used for growing mushroom, the basic of mushroom cultivation is similar. Besides natural wood, the growing containers may vary in case of artificial methods. Plastic growing bags and large wooden trays can also be used.
